Guess I'll be buying some real bike wear so I have to ask which is preferred
Bib shorts for sure! I was very unsure about them until I bought a pair. They are much more comfortable. I'll never buy regular cycling shorts again.

I replied shorts, but I have not tried bibs..... Bibs are supposedly good, if you have problems with regular bike shorts rolling down at the waist, if you don't have that problem, you can save some money by buying regular shorts, which tend to be a little cheaper. Regular shorts also don't have issues with nipple irritation, the straps can sometimes rub there, and that can be very bothersome. Best is if your getting more then one pair, get one of each, then you can decide for yourself. Regular shorts do work nicely under street clothes, not all riders want to have the cyclist look at all times,
Bibs. By the way, did I mention bibs. Oh and bibs. I will never buy regular shorts again, bibs only.

A little less than a clyde, here. But, I have both. I find both equally comfortable.

+1, what he said. I will be shocked if shorts receives more than a handful of votes. :)

I voted bib shorts, because when I just go out for a ride, that is the best thing for me. When I'm commuting, or running errands on my bike, then its a pair of MTB shorts and either a jersey or a wicking shirt of some sort.

I ride both, but bibs are definitely more comfortable, but also costs quite a bit more.

Shorts are more handy. Never had a problem with them.
If you wear bibs, you are locked in to bicycle jerseys. With shorts, you can buy wicking shirts at wally world for $5 to $10 each, and just tuck them in.

bibs. No plumber's butt. and why would you tuck in your jersey anyhoo?
As to their price, bibs can be had in the $60-80 range. Shorts are the same....

As previously mentioned, if you don't have the issue of shorts rolling down then there is no practical advantage to bibs. I personally prefer my shorts as my Mr. Winky apparently isn't as long as chipcom's, BTW Chip, I really hope it never gets tangled in your crank . If you're ever riding home and suffering a bought of the green apple splatters you'll wish you had regular shorts…or Imodium

I like shorts, because they don't fit a long torso very well. Plus, I found I like Pearl Izumi shorts the best.

Dood, to pee you just pull down front of bibs, whip it out and let er whiz, just like you'd do in shorts, cept you got a little farther to pull.
If you get a case of the trots...pull jersey/shirt over head, pull down bibs and squat. It ain't real hard, really. Granted, it ain't quite as fast as just pulling down some shorts, you just gotta HTFU and keep that sphincter shut for another second. ;)

Huh? I wear bibs and shirts all the time. Why would you be locked into jerseys...and more importantly, why do you feel compelled to tuck? :D

Depending on the cut of the bib just pulling down the front won't work. I can just barely get my demarchi bibs down far enough to let er out. I'd imagine that some bibs are cut higher than others unless mine are at the top of the spectrum.
Sometimes that extra second makes all the difference

I prefer bibs. As for taking a leak, just reach up inside the leg pull him out and pee away. I only know one guy who tried bibs then went back to shorts and please never tuck the jersey in.

Shirts are usually longer than jerseys, and need to be tucked in so they don't look tacky. Plus, you don't need a base layer under a shirt with shorts.

You should try the Voler or Performance Ultra bibs. ;)

Tacky? I ain't exactly Mr. GQ. :D
The size difference is minimal, a shirt being a wee bit longer in the front, while the jersey is a bunch longer in the rear (and usually has pockets). I'm curious though, why do you think you need to wear a base layer under bibs?

^.. I've learned to think my UnderArmour purchase my best winter purchase ever. I feel the cold.. Now, it takes much less incentive to go out when it's under 40. And all winter, I've not worn my Winter Gore Tex jacket. It's nice not to have the bulk.

Don't need one with bibs either. I'll wear a base layer when it's colder, and did try a summer weight a couple times, but nothing says you have to with bibs. I don't have chafing problems with the straps either, it's not like you're running and moving your upper body around that much...

Well yeah, I wear a base in the colder weather, bibs or shorts...I just never heard of anyone thinking that you had to wear a base layer if you wore bibs...in any temp.

Pfft...Miami ain't nuthin compared to some of the places I've been to and lived in. Yeah, I'm cold-blooded alright, which is why heat and humidity don't bother me much. :D

Bibs all day! Regular shorts either roll down on me or pinch me in half or both.

I haven't tried bibs. I have a long torso and worry that they'd be too tight and give me a wedgie. Are there bibs that work with a longish torso?

I use the padded shorts from nashbar. The type you can wear under pants, shorts etc. I am happy with those, because I don't need to be seen in public wearing spandex.
Bibs are great. Everything stays in place, no more problems with shorts rolling down at the waist, and they have a 'control top' effect. :)
Bibs. By the way, did I mention bibs. Oh and bibs. I will never buy regular shorts again, bibs only.
What Brian says!
Do you like plumbers butt? If so, wear shorts. Otherwise, wear bibs.

I'm mostly torso (6'3" with a 33" inseam) and I have bibs from Nalini, Castelli, PI, Voler, and Performance. Haven't had an issue with any of them, though the Castellis are the snuggest. Voler makes a quality product at their price. I suggest they are your first pair.... http://www.velowear.com/category.aspx?cat=CAT-BOTTOMS-MENS-BIBS

I just bought a pair of descente bibs from probikekit.com, the inseam is longer than i'd like but the bibs are very comfortable and the chamois is on point. They are also only 26.00 shipped, currently they only have xxl.
