Since I don't cruise any car forums anymore this is the best place I could think of to share this really nicely restored 912 I saw walking back from class today. I figured at least one person might appreciate it. Sorry for the crappy cell phone picture. I wish I could have snagged a few more but I didn't want to be a creeper in front off everybody getting out of class.

I was the proud owner of a red 356C with electric sunroof till my rat of a drunken brother destroyed it in a California mountain ditch. And I still get all :mad: every time I think about it.

I have always liked the Porsches of that vintage. Very clean looking. I recently did work for a client who had a very nice 73 911. Probably the last year before the huge bumpers.

I love the original 240Z's, too. Not too many of those around any more.

I used to have a 1984 Carrera coupe. A beautiful car, fun to drive, and as reliable as a Swiss watch. It was my daily driver for 13 years, and I sold it last summer on eBay - it had 153,000+ miles on it. A guy flew out from Oklahoma, gave me cash, and drove it home.

I miss that car. >SNIFF<

Is it a 4 door wagon? I don't know much about these cars, I like the coupes as well, but the 4 door wagon is the perfect blend of looking really classy while still maintaining good utility. I used to ride buy a mint red 2 door coupe on my way to school when I lived in vancouver every day. That is how I feel in love with the look of these old volvos.

Four door wagon for sure. Have had it since new (well, picked it up at the factory with my dad when I was 13), still a daily driver!

I used to have a 1970 Rover 3500S. Had about 50K miles on it. I sold it in 1997 because I had just bought a fixer house that needed a roof and I was tapped out from everything else. The guy that bought it shipped it back to England, where hopefully it is living happily.

If I had been in a place with a bigger garage and had more cash, things would have been different.

I had one of those volvo wagons. lovely little thing. Someone had put a 144 motor in it with a hot cam and a weber carb. The odometer had broken at 250,000. It got me through a Minnesota winter.
Before that there was a 260Z 2+2. The only year for the long wheelbase and the dainty little bumpers. I put a 280 EFI motor in it.
Both cars I shoulda kept. got rid of them both before the digital camera days, no pics.
I do love the skinny bumper Porsches. Elegant. all the fins and spoilers and DOT bumpers just weigh them down visually. I like the dainty pre DOT bumpers on most cars.

Moments like this I'm really bummed out that I don't have any pictures of the one vintage car I owned - a 1937 Buick Special two door fastback sedan. All original, in good running condition. Sold it back in the mid-80's when the motocycle bug really hit hard.

Moving things a bit closer to bicycles - here's the gamut of my alternative passion. The first pic (sorry for the poor quality, they're done on an old camera, years ago) is my and my wife's 1930 Indian 101 Scout - originally belonged to her father. Now, this is as close as you can get to a big heavy bicycle, and still have a motor. It's an absolute pain to drive, but I could never turn down a free bike:

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q10/sykerocker/Temporary%20files/syke4.jpg

The other was sold a few years ago, it's a 1997 Kawasaki ZX-6R that I was rear ended, hit and run (still have no memories of that day, and it happened eleven years ago). Figured it was God telling me to build that streetfighter I'd always wanted. At the same time, I took a wrecked Triumph Super III and cut it down to Speed Triple specs. After a while the bigger engine won out (doesn't it always?), so The Zed was sold off to a Rocker buddy's wife:

What is the issue with the first gen Boxter?

Amani576
02-12-09, 07:54 PM
*Drool* 914-6's are just plain awesome, quite uncommon too. They look especially good with the wide bodies. Really, though, 914's are just so much better to look at than 1st gen Boxsters. 914's stood out in their own quirky way, while the Boxsters looked quite generic as far as sports cars go.
As far as vintage Porsches go, I'm lusting a 63' 911. As far as Porsches go period, I'm lusting a brand new 911 GT2 (I'll never have a $200k car though...).
-Gene-

Edit: Bill, my issue with the first gen Boxster is that it's so generic looking. Porsches have their own distinct looks to them. To me, that model just didn't. I also hated seeing one every day (because they were priced so cheaply), most often driven by (no offense ment to any women here) some woman only concerned with her appearance and possessions, "I drive a Porsche, look at me!". /rant

I enjoy the attitude towards 914's almost forty years later, as I remember that they got damned little respect when new. Wasn't the 914 four cylinder sold as a Volkswagen everywhere BUT the US? Lots of little nitpicking complaints in the buff books reviewing them when new, plus the usual sneer, "Well, it's not a real Porsche?"

I seem to remember the same garbage about the 924-944 and 928's, too. Which are the only Porsche's that ever interested me.

Nice to see we've gotten over such petty tripe.

I owned two Triumph TR3A's. 1960's. Sold one lost the other in a storage unit that I just stopped paying for when I went back to school. Really fun cars, no issues. Later, Land Cruisers until I started feeling really guilty about the environment and the gas prices were killing me.

Now, Corolla. :o

There was a "stock" 914 that used to show up at the autocross events I went to in my Karmann Ghia, back when you could autocross a "stock" Ghia and not get whipped by a pile of Civics.
That guy was a really good driver. That car just danced through chicanes. Gracefull.

Uhm, the first generation Boxsters were much more expensive, even in inflation adjusted dollars than a 914.

1970 4 cylinder 914 listed for $3495, about $18,000 in 2009 dollars.
1997 Porsche Boxster listed for $39,980, about $51,000 in 2009 dollars.

But I know what you mean. Driving a second generation Boxster S, it bugs me a bit that it is perceived as a ladie's car.

Also rumor has it that Porsche has a mid engined 2 seater, priced below the Boxster, in the works to be the modern day 914.

I think 1st gen and 2nd gen Boxters are nice looking cars. I thought maybe you were referring to some mechanical issues when referring to the 1st gen. I'd own one in a heartbeat.

Around here, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a female-driven Boxster (S or otherwise). That might have something to do with it. :)

The men seem to be more keen on the newer Cayman, which is really a Boxster hardtop. They're both nice little cars, but I gotta admit I like the look of the coupe better. Same with 911's - I never cared for the lines of the Cabriolets and Targas.

Amani576
02-13-09, 06:27 PM
The current gen Boxster actually looks like a Porsche to me. My only gripe about the Cayman is that the engine is midmounted in a box you can't even really get in to, cept' for checking/adding oil and other fluids.
And I guess because of how often I saw them around here they just seemed cheap (as a Porsche). Though they were still substantially less expensive than a 911. Maybe there were/are just a lot of well off people around here.
As far as VW's go... I'm a lover of Type 3/34's. I'd love to get my hands on a Notchback, drop a Porsche engine it, redo the suspension and frame and have a beastly little sleeper. I love all classic vee-dubs, though. Simple, elegant (in a way), and fun. Being close to one just makes alot of people smile. Kind of like riding a bike...

During the dot com boom, everyone with two nickels to rub together and the wherewithal to float a loan were buying Boxsters. It seemed like every other parking spot at Cisco had one in it. They were everywhere.

When I was killing a rainy day about 6 months ago, I went and looked at the Cayman's. They sticker for ~70k new, depending. That's a pretty good hunk of change. Right now, people who are overextended are dumping a lot of nice 911's on the market for (relatively) cheap. With a little digging you can grab a nice one (2000- 2003 models) with low miles for ~30k, and cash is talking - hell, it's speaking very loudly.

If you have the itch for one and you have the money, now is the time to buy.
