Bicycle Mechanics - Rear Mech Derailleur Help

Hi, Im a bit of a noob, just after some general advice. Whilst out the other day, I stacked it lol, my rear mech got bent some how, then got caught in the wheel, and has snapped clean down the middle. So i'm needing a complete new mech. The bike in question is not a dear bike, just one I use to get to college and around town etc. How much should I expect to pay for a new mech and for it to be fitted, i dont want to get ripped off, as I dont know much about bikes.

No damage to the frame or wheel what-so-ever, just the mech needs replacing. Well atleast I'm pretty sure thats all that needs doing, in which case it might not be as expensive as I thought.

Cheapest option will be ~15 for the derailleur and 10 to put it on.

I've seen some cheap shimano ones on ebay, just I'm unsure as to which specs I should be getting?

That depends on your cassette and chainrings. How many cogs on the rear cassette? How many teeth on the largest cog of the cassette? How many chainrings up front?

Seven cogs at the rear, with the largest having 34 teetg and 3 cogs at the front.

You'll need a mountain bike rear derailleur.

Yup - look for a long-cage mountain derailleur. You can find some pretty cheap, and good, ones all over the net.

Likely the hangar got bent too. That's where the DER attaches to the bike.
