I normally just take water out on my training rides. If i'm going out for more than 40 miles, or i'm planning on going pretty hard i pack a bottle of gatorade and a bottle of water.
I've decided to get pretty serious this year and try racing. I've noticed that damn near everyone at races has some kind of endurance sport specific drink like cytomax. So is anyone else out there drinking this stuff? Do you find it makes a big difference over gatorade or any other basic sports drinks? I guess i could see it working on a longer road race or training ride, but i don't see how it could make any difference on a 45 minute crit or an hour long high intensity training ride after work.
Any thoughts?

I definitely prefer it to Gatoraid when its really hot outside in the summer. Gatoraid in heat tends to give me sugar stomach and nothing is worse than being 40 miles from home with a painful stomach. Cytomax at half of the insane amount they recommend using per bottle tends to be perfect for me.

I use cytomax in the same manner as Nikephoros. I was buying gatorade by the bottle but I think that cytomax by the container is cheaper.

First of all, remember that there are more than one kind of sports drinks. Some are targeted for replacing electrolytes, while others like Cytomax, supply a carbohydrate that is "designed" to keep energy levels stable during high intensity activity.
As you suspect, it is difficult to determine whether these products aid performance for shorter term exercise sessions. My own experience suggests that even if there is no specific performance benefit during exercise, some sports products, when used correctly will speed recovery and delay fatigue.
Those factors are realized as a "benefit" when viewed across an entire training regimen.

Yeah, but I like Cytomax Lite when it's really hot
