My friend wants to get a new mountain bike, hardtail (my suggestion…lol). Has around 1000$ to spend. He was checking out Raleigh site,Talus '04 to be exact. . Component's look fine, but I'm not sure how Raleighs rate these days. Tomorrow we’ll go to a few bike shops and check out what they have; maybe even a 03 model. I was thinking of recommending Specialized Stumpjumper, but if there is something better or just as good out there for 1 grand, let me know. Thanks !

I am going to push a local maker here, Cortina XCO (http://www.cortinacycles.com/Cortina-2003-01/pages/H_XCO_PAGE_1.html)

They make a very nice HT. I believe the XCO is 550$ for frame and then you can get a parts kit or build it up your self. The guys over there are helpful and easy to deal with. Give 'em a look-see.

Have him buy a frame and all the parts, have them sent to me, I'll build it up for him, and then box it up and ship it back. Of course, I'd have to take it for a test ride first! :)

You can get a really nice build kit LX and XT (or Sram x.7) and a frame off of ebay and keep it right around $1,000.00

O.k., this is a bit more money, but just to give you an idea.

Build Kit: http://wheelworld.com/site/itemdetails.cfm?ID=2677&Catalog=39&sort=Price
Frame: http://wheelworld.com/site/itemdetails.cfm?ID=2188&Catalog=39&sort=Price

$1,300 for a Killer FR HT!

Plus the pleasure of building it up yourself!

I'm sure you can get another build kit for around $850, that would be more XC oriented.

O.k., I was having fun!

I went to www.adrenalinebikes.com and put together a Kona Caldera XC frame with a Manitou Black fork and mostly XT build kit and the TOTAL price is under $1,000.

You can CUSTOM select your individual components and recalculate, and even upgrade the frame to whatever you desire.

This way you get a bike that NO ONE else has, and you get to pick and choose the components that are specific to your needs.

There are alot of great bikes in that price range. I ride this ('03 model) and love it:

The Genesis Geometry is great.

Thanks, but the guy is not interested in building, just riding. your idea does interest me, however, I'm not looking to buy/build a bike right now, although I really want 1. Thanks anyways.
