Mountain Biking - forks?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i'm looking to change my rockhopper's front crmo fork to a suspension fork. i'm not looking to spend a whole lot for it, but dont' want those crappy mozo forks. i actually like the RST Gila or the Insync fork. just as long as i can turn up the suspension to make it stiffer. i know those forks may not be the best.. but for me it'll do.
but i have been trying to find them on ebay and hasn't had much luck. i think my rockhopper is 1 1/8th threaded, so thus far i haven't had much luck. what happened to those people that upgraded their forks? don't they need to sell that somewhere? anyway.. one more thing... since my rockhopper is threaded.. is it possible for me to get a non-threaded on installed by my lbs?

www.mtbr.com look under classifieds. or www.craigslist.org and search under bikes classifieds. actually, tell me how long a steerer you need? i've got a couple forks and i can let go of one of them. i'm in the bay area too.

tfunk.. that's the thing.. i'm very new to this idea of modding bikes. i'm not exactly sure how long of a steerer i need. where do you live by chance? do you work on your own bikes?
To go threadless you will need a new headset. Also, I would never, never buy a used RST or Nsync fork... they aren't that great to begin with and who knows how long they will last after the previous owner put it through who knows what. Also stay away from older Judy's and stuff like that... they leak like crazy.
If you want to go threadless you will need a headset and stem. The length of your steer tube will be dependent on the overall height of the installed headset from bottom to about 1/4" below the top of the stem after if any spacers.

Just make sure your steerer tube is in fact a 1-1/8", some older bikes (inlcd. Specialized) had only 1" steerers. If your is only 1", it's really going to limit your choices.
Buy as Hunter stated, new fork, new headset and new stem.
Plus, the tools and experience to know what you are doing!

I think I saw 1 1/8" threaded Judy for $99 a few months ago at nashbar.com or supergo.com. You might want to check it out (you can certainly do this yourself- just carefully measure it), but the warning about the 1" width should be checked out first.

yup, that's what i'm going to do. as a matter of fact, i've posted on specialized.com in their FAQ section to ask about the specs for my rockhopper. this way it'll be easier change things.

i'm in the south bay but i go school in the east bay, where are you from? i've got a judy sl with total airs i could let go for pretty cheap. also have a 1" threaded futureshock if you've got a 1" headset. i try to do most of the work on my bike myself, but sometimes i still have to take it to the shop because i lack all the tools.
