Commuting - Runny Nose!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
When I ride more than 5 miles my nose starts running like crazy.
Itīs been like this ever since I started riding a few years ago.
It takes most of a day to stop so basically Iīve been walking around like I had a constant cold for about 3 years!
Can anyone relate to this? Or perhaps has an explanation/solution to it..
Itīs really starting to get on my nerves...
The weather has nothing to do with it..
Last summer was a hot one where I live but still my nose did itīs best to resemble the Niagra falls...

Perhaps an allergy to pollen or dust ?
Does this happen when you exercise indoors as well ?

Mine will do that when it's cold. Even around 15 d celious it will still run a little. When warm it doesn't run at all.
I, however, have allergies and cannot breathe through my nose at all, espcially when cycling.
Explanation:
Either cold or allergies. Get an allergy test to see.
Solution:
Take a antihistamine (Reactine, Hisminal, etc)
Or
Ever hear of a snot rocket?
Digger

Yeah my nose does the same thing, always has, and not quite sure why. Its even worse now since I have severe allergies and its allergy season here! The Claritin... it does nothing... NOTHING!!! AHHHH!!!! :-)

This may sound like a silly idea, but I hope it helps:
If you can exercise indoors without a runny nose, then I would say something in your outdoor environment is causing your nose to run. It may be dust, pollen, auto exhaust, or something else.
Get one of those inexpensive dust masks, like the ones used by folks that install drywall. Go on a five mile ride. If your nose runs, the particles are smaller than the mask will filter, If your nose does not run, then wear the mask for a few rides and then take the used mask to your allergist. Ask him/her what is stuck in the mask, because it makes your nose run.
You might also vary your route some and record your nose's reaction, it may be a particular kind of plant or diesel exhaust from the road causing your problem.

I get it occasionally - even in the warmer weather (we seldom get any other kind around here). If there's enough, I fire a snot rocket. If not, I pull out the spanky hanky.
I also get it in cold weather...

ok. here's the poop. your nose is doing exactly what it is supposed to do when faced with change in temperature and when faced with pollution/allergens. if it is a persistant drip throughout the year then it probably isn't an allergy. Allergies tend to be worst during the dawn (with the rising dew, humidity, etc) and at dusk (same) instead of a cold or when faced with persistent exposure to pollutants, etc.
i'd try riding outside of heavy traffic (pollutants) >>>your nose/sinus is smartly trying to flush the allergans and pollutants out of your system. if only all of our system where that efficient (albeit not as mucus-y)
Thanks for all the suggestions!
Well i guess it could be something in the air, since my route contains riding along the beach, through a meadow, an industrial area, a slaughterhouse and then finally ending up in the city..

Yes, and no.
Every time I ride my nose runs and I sweat. But they both stop soon after I stop riding. Yes, it's annoying when I'm in a grocery line and my nose won't quit running, but a hanky will do the job.
I never had an "all day" nose run due to biking.
