Alt Bike Culture - convert 1 1/8 fork for use w/1" steerer

I'm planning to build a tandem from donor bikes and spare parts, I have a 1 1/8" triple tree suspension fork and the front donor bike has a 1" steerer tube. Can any of you clever bike hackers give me some clues about doing this without risking a broken neck and preferably without welding? I can design it so any front end additional length is between the head tube and the fork.

can you post a pic of how the steer tube is conected to the crown?I have some ideas but I need to see the fork.

Finally, without a working camera I had a hard time so I worked backwards and found the same fork on Ebay. The pic is attached and I added a link to the source the NYCBikes ebay store which is http://myworld.ebay.com/nycbikes/ in case the upload doesn't work or anyone else is inspired. :).

can you get another triple tree fork and swap out the legs?

The question came up once before and someone suggested outboard bottom bracket bearings as a way to run a 1 1/8 fork in a 1 inch head tube.

How about replacing the steerer tube on the fork?

Or cut out a head tube and some or all of a top tube and downtube from another frame and lug than in place of your donor bike's frame.

I am leaning towards replacing the steerer tube on the fork. Overall I figured that the triple tree would be stronger than a regular fork. If the 1" steerer from the original fork would slip inside the 1 1/8" tube I would double them up but I don't think it's that much smaller.

Well a regular triple tree fork would be stronger, but not that one, it's a kinda cheapo suspension fork.

sorry it took me so long to post back . after looking at the pix the first thing I thought is just get another fork that fork is not of very high quallity it would be more cost effective to just buy or find a new one . take it to a machine shop and the can make you a steer tube that will be safe.

if you use a fork like that on a tandem you will kill yourself when it fails

some bikes with 1" steerers can use 1 1/8" forks too
