A friend broke a frame on his Trek, how long should he expect it to take before he is on the road (well single track really) again.

It all depends on the shop and the Local Rep for Trek.
We would only see our Rep every couple of weeks, so it would sometimes take 2 or 3 weeks just for the Rep to determine whether the damage was a warranty claim or just abuse and mis-use. Then, if it was November, and hunting season in the Mid-West, it could take another 4-6 weeks. If it wasn't hunting season, at least 3 more weeks.
So overall about 4 to 6 weeks to be up and running again!

Your question sounds like you think Trek will just give your friend a new frame. Actually, the Trek warranty only covers broken frames if they failed due to a defect in materials and workmanship (like C'dale and the other major brands). Accidents, abuse, general wear and tear and fatigue damage aren't covered.
Believe the LBS will want to talk with Trek, and maybe have a Trek rep look at the frame, before agreeing to any replacement.
