The Garmin comes with its own charger for the main unit battery. Instructions say to charge for 3.5 hours. Is this battery charger ok, or is there one better?

I haven't had any problems with that charger. What do you want? a faster charge time?

Not particularly a faster charge time, but want to make sure its a charge that's not going to prematurely shorten the battery's life.

You can also charge being plugged into the usb port of your computer..

Hopefully, Garmin has built some overload protection into the 305 itself.

It's a $10 lithium Ion battery which is pretty standard these days. If you want to prolong its life, disconnect it from the charger when it's 80% full and don't use it when it's less than 10% full

These batteries lack venting, so if it was overcharged, you'd know it.

As long as they don't charge too fast (and 3.5 hours isn't too fast) and cut off properly before exceeding 4.2 volts/cell (and they all do, or they ruin the battery the first time it happens, and possibly causes a fire), it's all good.
What you're probably thinking of is a concern with NiMH or NiMH chargers, the ones that don't know how to detect when the battery is fully charged and shut off anyways.
The charger that comes with the Edge 305 (or just plugging it into your computer's USB plug) is just fine.
