Tandem Cycling - Caps for FSA Gossamer cranksets?

Hi,
I did notice that both cranksets on our new (to us) tandem are open on one side. The seller said that he believed that they have always been open. Does anybody know of caps that can be placed on there? I know it is sealed, but it still looks goofy and can collect dirt. I searched for them and did not find any, but I admit that I don't know the correct search term for them

I filled the hole on my mine utilizing a bar end plug with a couple of wraps of electrical tape. Worked fine. Don't know if there's a "formal" plug for them. They come with the hole. Like a donut!

Most of those plugs were chromed metal with allen wrench opening in the center. Did run across a few plastic ones. Not unusual to loose them due to road vibration. A bit of loctite used to fix 'em in place.

Different animal, Zona. The FSA Gossamer has a hollow axle swedged(?) onto the drive side crankarm. Leaves a nice, round opening in the center of the crankarm with no caps or anything to thread caps into, thusly:

We have an 06 Gossamer crankset and the opening has never been a problem. The design is reported to build a stiff crank.

The bigger diameter axle probably does! For most folks, putting something in that hole is probably more of an aesthetics issue. :)

With me, however, on my TruVativ Rouleur triple crankset of the same design, that ring of bright metal where the BB axle joins with the carnk arm, (shown clearly in the pic I linked to), rusted to s**t in a year flat. At first I tried disguising it by cleaning it up and sticking a handlebar end plug in the hole, but eventually I lot confidence in the crankset and threw it in the trash. (Chainrings also had developed leprosy by that time, I might add.)

Your crankset, (and the OP's) are FSA, not TruVativ, so I'm not saying that will happen to them, but it certainly did to mine. So I have no confidence in either TruVativ or that design, and will never buy one again.

Disclaimer: I DO live in Florida, the bikes DO live in the un-air-conditioned garage, and I DO sweat. But those things have been true with other components that DIDN'T rust to s**t as well.

I have a Team Issue FSA crank on a single bike. It has a little cap that presses in that space.

I think there's a decent shot that the cap on the Team Issue would fit.

just went out and tried the cap from the Team Issue crank on the Gossamer crank.

It covers the opening fine, but internally its too lose to stay in place. A little putty, glue, gum, or a thicker O ring and it would work fine.

Cosmetically, it fits flush, and hecks its got a CF weave finish!

OK, I should have used duct tape. It would have made the bike MUCH faster because, as everyone knows, duct tape is ONE with the FORCE! It has both a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together! :D

Same thing with a bar end plug. That's where I used a couple wraps of tape, to make the inserted part thicker. Quick fix, worked fine.


No rust, but it does not shift like Ultegra.

If the hole is covered, then you won't have to worry about yellowjackets flying in and making a nest.

Bet they'd get a little dizzy if they remained on the nest when you went for a ride!!

Nope......never seen that happen but you never can tell about yellowjackets......
