Foo - Things that begin with the letter B

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Berkeley, CA. University of California at Berkeley. Possible boat to temporarily live on? Possible job working on a **** boat? Not the most glamorous of jobs but get to be out on the bay...

Bellingham, WA. Western Washington University. On Puget Sound. Recommended to me by my chemistry instructor.

Ironically, when I saw "Things that begin with the letter B" the first thing that came to mind was an act that could be described colloquially as "poo pumping"

Very close to a lot of the awesomest road riding evar, and I hear the mountain biking is pretty swell as well.

Get Venn with it.

Moving to UC Berkeley? You'll be a 'Bear' ('Golden Bear' to be exact). You could get a job being a barista, bike mechanic, bike messenger, Bartender, Bass Player, banker, bookstore worker . . . but with the California economy 'boinking', you'll probably end up being a Bum in the Bay Area. Bummer :(

Please, like there's any comparison. Here are just a very few things that come to mind about life in Berkeley.

A university full of smart people, Nobel prize winners, hippies, conservatives.

A city full of hippies, kooks, and regular people.

There are lots of asian co-eds (I believe asians are the single biggest ethnicity at the university) if you got the asian fetish thing going.

There's a really goofy but really elaborately conceptualized and designed hippie raw restaurant called Café Gratitude (http://www.cafegratitude.com/). I think it's a place Shadiyah would really like.

Legendary Indian Rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Rock_Park) to practice bouldering or rope climbing. Galen Rowell spent a lot of time here. Also Cragmont Rock Park.

http://www.serkes.com/photos/blog/berkeley_park_indian_rock_sf.jpg

The legendary Freight and Salvage (http://www.thefreight.org/) has tons of live acoustic music, with mandolins and stuff.

Epic bike riding.

Epic views.

The Bubble Lady (http://www.lionlight.com/Julia.html).

Stoney Burke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoney_Burke).

Chez Panisse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chez_Panisse) for when you're feeling rich.

Marmot Mountain Works (http://www.marmotmountain.com/store-berkeley.htm) for outdoor equipment.

I think Mountain Hardwear used to be based in Berkeley, but apparently it's now in nearby Richmond. Warehouse sales twice a year, great stuff for over 50% off.

In the Fall when I'm at the stadium enjoying Cal football, you can walk down Telegraph Avenue and there will be people noticing the jerseys and caps and saying "Is there a game today?" In other words, it's not a typical college town. Plenty of people don't care about spectator sports.

3 to 3.5 hours to epic snowboarding at Tahoe. The snow in the Sierra sucks however compared to the Rockies. It's called Sierra cement, high water content, but when powdery it's fine.

4 hours to epic big wall climbing at Yosemite or day hikes to the top of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, etc.

San Francisco is right across the bay. The city of freaks and billionaires.

Just an hour(?) from x136. This may be the biggest negative thing about life in Berkeley.

Chez Panisse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chez_Panisse) for when you're feeling rich. When I was a kid, my parents had a cool old poster from that place. Didn't know it was real, let alone in California. Neat.

Just an hour(?) from x136. This may be the biggest negative thing about life in Berkeley.Luckily, the stench of failure and despair precedes me, so residents of the Bay area can hide or prepare sufficient weaponry.
