Ok this is a retro- french question.
Will a 5 speed Sunrace freewheel go onto a Maillard/Atom hub (which currently has an Atom freeweel)?
Is the threading compatible?

I like the Mailard hubs
they were on a lot of old Raleigh racers
Ive built one onto a 27" steel rim for my Elswick hopper single speeder.
I just screwed a standard thread 16tooth freewheel onto the hub
so the 5 speed sunrace will fit no problem

I had one on an 80s Peugeot. Its a nicely executed design on paper but they're losers in practice. And its impossible to find parts for them and that was true even in the mid 90s when I bought mine. Ditch it and get yourself a modern hub. You won't regret it.
Care to clarify your claim?

The answer to your question is: Yes. A standard 5-spd. freewheel should thread on with no problem. Be sure to grease the threads on the hub and freewheel. And be sure to have the correct freewheel-remover.
Even the French used standardized tpi on their rear hubs. Otherwise you may need a Mon Dieu! freewheel. :D

I think your talking about the Helicomatic, but Mailard made a host of ordinary freewheel hubs as well. The Helicomatic has it's fair share of problems, and I would advise not getting too attached to one. Mailard freewheel hubs on the other hand are awesome. I have a 700 series that spins better than most anything else I can find. Don't dismiss Mailard because of that one idea, after all, what company hasn't had their fair share of folly (Dyna Drive, Delta brakes...the list goes on)

It's no problem as long as you don't have a French threaded hub. I've seen French threaded Maillard 700's on eBay. It's very difficult to find freewheels for them.
