Advocacy & Safety - 3feet2pass.com - 3 foot safe passing distance

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You should refine both the logo you have attached in this post and the graphic on the page you linked.

The logo does not indicate what 3ft refers to. It could just as well mean that cyclists should be given 3ft of pavement space on the road to use.

The web page graphic is not as ambiguous, it is indicating that passing drivers should give 3ft between their vehicle and the inner bike lane stripe. I don't think that is the message you are trying to communicate.

These are not nits - both my examples are real every day misinterpretations of the Arizona 3ft law from associated official and unofficial graphics and paraphrases of the law.

We are 2 cyclists who came up with a crazy idea yesterday. Just having a website up with any graphics was a big achievement for us, and were really stoked to be doing anything to help the cause.

The website is non-profit, and we are donating our time while we work our real jobs :)

On another note, Bicycle Colorado made some nice graphics, so enjoy.

Thanks for your support!

Thanks for the work on this topic! Here's what's happening locally:

Maryland
SENATE BILL 428/HOUSE BILL 496
Vehicle Laws - Bicycles, EPAMDs, and Motor Scooters - Rules of the Road
Synopsis: Requiring that a driver of a motor vehicle, when overtaking a bicycle, an Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD), or a motor scooter, pass safely at a specified distance; requiring a driver of a motor vehicle to yield the right-of-way to a person who is riding a bicycle, an EPAMD, or a motor scooter in a bicycle lane; etc.

Points:
* This very important bill increases safety for bicyclist by requiring a driver of a vehicle to pass a bicyclist at a distance of 3 feet.
* Requires a driver to yield the right of way to a person who is riding a bicycle in a designated bicycle lane.

I have to agree with noisebeam on the graphics involved.

Personally I would like some sort of graphic that would resemble this:

<---3 feet.... .o
<.....to..... ... /L
<....pass. . =()>()

Thanks for the info re: Maryland. We'll post it on the site. Every bit of local info helps. I think we might need an intern from University of Colorado Boulder to do research on existing laws and upcoming legislation. Anyone out there looking to do some legal research?

This info is turning out to be somewhat tough to locate for each state. Local ordinances like Boulder's, that's even tougher, a.k.a., darn near impossible.

Thanks again for your help!

http://www.cbcef.org/give3feet/ has a catchy graphic; I believe that for a stamped, self-addressed envelope they will send you a little 4" square bumpersticker

That's definitely another catchy logo, and a fantastic local action group for the Seattle and King County area. I think we might contact them and link them from our site. Hopefully we find more local groups like this.

Starting in May 2007, Cascade Bicycle Club is embarking on a public education campaign to spread the message of giving cyclists three feet of space. You'll see the safety campaign around Seattle and King County on billboards, buses, bumper stickers and posters.
