General Cycling Discussion - Shaving "that area"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

OK i'll face it.... I'm a hairy bast'd. I have been finding lately that my shorts are not all that comfortable anymore (am 17 so still growing more hair lol). I am going to buy some new 8 panel shorts (never had flash ones!) as my current 6 panel are stuffed. But I was wondering on top of doing the legs, if shaving the contact areas would be benificial to comfort? I have a certain female friend who wants to wax my legs and uhh generally help me out :D. so does anyone do this?
Hope this isnt too uhh open considering you guys do talk about genital numbness.

Give your self a nice trim; don't shave unless you plan on daily upkeep. If not, its a painful learning experience... trust me.

:D cheers...but why do it myself:p
The front side should be ok. If you are going "smooth" make sure you take care of it in the shower every day. The back side however is another story. Even with daily attention, you could end up with an a$$ full of ingrown hairs! OUCH!

Shaving the frontside isnt to bad. Its a full shave and I do it once ever 2 days or so. Its a nice smooth feeling...man i kinda feel dirty talkin about this lol

hmm depends what you determin "front side"... contact area only and leave the butt alone so it doesnt ingrow? :S haha I thought I would be odd to shave this area but it appears to be normal :D

Super short, then rub with a cloth ect to make the hair ends less sharp.

I shave all the way up but leave the groinal area trimmed short with clippers. It can be very uncomfortable in areas that have cantact if you forget to shave a day or two. Kind of like being rubbed with the fine side of a cheese grater. So I leave them a little longer :)

What's ingrown hair and how does it occur? What does it feel like or looks like?

hahahaha this is an awesome thread
ingrown hair is when the end of your hair grows back into the skin. it looks like a loop of hair that's sticking out of your skin. it commonly happens in areas where your skin is compressed.

In the contact area, does anyone ever develop small pimple type sores? They are very much like a pimple, but don't form a head and can't be "popped" like a pimple. In case you're thinking they might be disease related, I'm pretty sure they're not. They are just a minor irritation..... though not a cure, I've been using Bag Balm and it seems to help. In 20 minutes I leave for a 100 mile ride from Rockford to Galena Illinois with the last 20 being hills, returning on an 80 mile route tomorrow. woo hoo! ride on!!

I have shaved that area when I was playing H2Opolo. I hate shaving in the first place and found that it not only can be come irritated if you do not keep up with it, it also iches like crazy when the hair starts comming back. If you must then I would say just do a bit of a trim. I think SuperCuts would do it anyway you want for a reasonable price;)
Some what on but off topic. This reminds me of a time during infintry school a buddy was shaving his sack (for a bit of a different reason) and another guy jump in the bath room and took a pic. Funny as hell because of the expression on his face while holding his nuts up and a razor to them;)
What shaving cream do you recommend? And what kind of blade? Double edge? Triple edge? And what direction do you stroke to avoid a rash? What about after shave, I hear it might sting? And how do you navigate around those tricky areas?
And what will the women think?

leave yourself some fuzzy shorts.
Depending on the job you do, the chicks will dig it. Believe me. :)
Unless, of course, you end up with nasty ingrowns. I vote for trimmed short, but not shaved totally for the aformentioned reasons.

Ummm..I use a beard\moustach electric trimmers. A razor? geez, if the kids popped a balloon in the hallway.......
Actually I started not for cycling, I mentioned to an ex that I ummm-preferred less hair. She said she did too and handed me a razor. ;) The things we will do for love...

Word of warning. Ingrowing hairs are painful, and in extreme cases will require surgery to correct. One of my workmates is our truck driver, and has just returned after 6 weeks of lying on his front after surgery to remove an ingrowing hair from his butt.
I use an electric shaver and use the trimmer option. Make sure you don't get any loose skin caught in the trimmer teeth otherwise... soprano city!

My best luck has been cheap, disposable double edge razors(easy to get , in a big bag) and old single edge razors(These are harder to find) and I go with the hairs on my (massive :) ) quads to prevent in grown hairs and against the hairs on my shins which seem to be more durable. The first couple of times you will be "raw" after. You need to give yourself a chance to toughen up. I keep the ingrfown hairs in check with a needle, if I see one I just lift it through the skin. NOTE: This may not be what the medical proffesionals want you to do

What I want to know is how on god's good earth do you see well enough "down there" to be able to lift hairs out with a needle...

Here's a pic of an ingrown hair. Might not do much to educate, but it should bring more views to this thread since there's an attachment in here!

shave? uh... just trim the area.... borrow a hair trimmer, put on a # (i use 4)... then return the trimmer back to unsuspecting friend ;)
Oh goodness, don't use a razor. Keep em short with an electric razor and a guard.
I am er...uh...hairy also and I use a 1/8" guard. NEVER a razor, are you mad?

True or False:
If you shave, will the hair come back faster and thicker? I've always wondered if shaving would be a bad idea if your hair came back worse than before when you decided to stop.

the hair is all the same length, so it initally looks thicker while it is growing out. as the hairs grow out and fall out at different times (unsyncronized) it starts to return to normal.
so...yes AND no

Do ingrown hairs make themselves obvious?
Sometimes painfully so!
Especially in this area.
Oh yeah, I shaved a couple of times, and decided it wasn't worth it. Now I just keep it nicely trimmed!

Get yourself one of these (http://www.shavercentre.com/wahl_peanut.html), and if you want to trim additional areas (torso, arms) it works great. Any good beauty supply place should have them.
Yeah, maybe it ain't too manly, but when it's growing thick 'n scraggly (and losing its natural color) a
serious trim makes one feel real neat and clean.

dealing with an ingrown hair issue as we speak, "clean" wasn't the way to go.

I haven't read this entire thread so forgive if I'm repeating...
Shaving with a razor can be the very cause of in grown hair. I learned this from an esthetician. I had been a razor user for shaving the face. For years I occasionally got pimples on my neck at the hair line. I asked her about it because as a teen I never had acne. She said "you're using a razor" and that's the cause of those sores. They're weren't pimples ...They were in grown hairs. She grabbed a pair of tweasers and augered in there (ouch!) and pulled out a hair!
You see, a razor can cause the hair to curl back against the skin just like curling the packing ribbon on a wrapped present with a knife.
So, don't shave it with a razor, Kiwi. Trim it with clippers, use an electric razor, wax it (ouch! too close to the short and curlies), or use nair (yuck!)
BTW, I have many friends from NZ that I've visited. Great white water rafting!

Do ingrown hairs make themselves obvious?
Yes, they wear very gawdy bike jerseys and matching shorts as if they were spancered by Colnago or some other chi-chi frame maker. :roflmao: I crack me up.
Seriously, you'll know. They're like pimples that don't pop. They stay around for as long as it takes your body to dissolve the hair. Kinda like bad friends who won't leave.
If you have a girl that is willing to wax that area for you, she may not actually like you.
Frankly, it seems like too much effort to go bald there. A nice trim doesn't hurt though.

well she wants to wax the legs for me...lots of girls are keen to do this it seems..even ones that I know are friends.
In the first instance of this thread, i was in fact referring to shaving not the wind catching danglies, but the area around...I would only ever think of TRIMMING and not shaving poor old Fred and friends.

I recommend filling up an adult diaper (like Depends or "Oops, I Crapped My Pants") with nair and having a seat.
Its crevasse if you have a fat ass, or crevice if you have a flat one, by the by.

False.
How would it know it's been shaved? :)
Possibly, but why does most body hair (all of it except for hair on your head, unless I'm forgetting something) grow to a certain length, then stop until you shave or cut it off? :)
I went to the hospital a few years ago to have a lung capacity test done. They had to shave part of my chest to attach the electrodes. The problem was, after the test was done, I had these four or five areas were shaved and the rest was the regular carpet. Sooooooo......I shaved my chest. I felt really weird not having the hair there after about 15 years of having it there. I also felt fat(er).
When it was growing back, I was miserable. It was like that episode of Seinfeld where he shaved his chest. Itchy like crazy! It also grew in thicker. I didn't think that was possible.
I now only shave from my eyeballs to my collar bones. I hate shaving, and will do as litle of it as possible. My wife calls me a walking carpet. And yet, the ultimate irony is that I'm going bald.
Nice.

As far as I can remember the answer to this is not that hair "knows when to stop growing" - it's just that it falls out after a certain amount of time. So head hair will keep on growing for a long time, while eyebrow hair grows for less time. Of course at any particular moment a particular patch of hair that has been left to grow (not clipped / trimmed) will have hairs of different lengths, but the overall impression is that the hair is an even length.

I used a razor one time around the ENTIRE area (front and back) BIGGEST mistake of my life....the re-grow was horrible.
