I have a 7'x5' rug that I bought for my previous apartment, which had hardwood floors. I moved to an apartment with a carpeted surface. Are rugs pretty much intended for hard surfaces, or is it equally common to put them on carpet?

I want honest answer here, please. Like, not "I think it would be okay" from the wishy-washy "whatever you like" school of thought. Because if it's not a good idea, I am putting it on Craigslist

If the rug doesn't clash with the carpet, then it's ok to put it. If not, CL.

run on carpet is fine.

It's fine. Especially in a rental where you don't like the base carpet (or want to protect it), it can be a good idea.

You want to make sure there is nothing on the bottom of the rug that will damage the carpet, or any kind of sticky material on the bottom of the rug that will get ground into the carpet over time.

You also might want to use some light two-sided rug tape to keep the rug from slipping around if that is a problem.

Whether the carpet "goes with" the rug is up to you.

I think the carpet does go with.

Question about damage protection -- I still have the rubber waffle mat that I bought to protect the hardwood floors. Should I keep that in place? I can't imagine what damage it would do to carpet other than maybe stain it (which seems unlikely)

If the rug ties the room together, I say go for it, Dude.

Sounds like it might be too much - you end with a pretty high stack if you have carpet, waffle mat, and rug.

I'd try it without the rubber waffle mat first.

Thanks fellow foosters. And of course I appreciate the Lebowski reference (favorite movie).

Were you expecting Martha Stewart to stop by unexpectedly?

It's only ok if you have a screen door at your front door.

Wait...isn't it a bit like wearing a toupe' when you're not bald?

I think it depends on the existing carpet. That's the first concern. Even if I really loved that rug, I would not insist that it be on the carpet. Heck, I might even have the rug cleaned and hang it on the wall.

It is OK. I have rugs all over my house, it helps to keep the carpets clean. My kids are spilling juice, soda, milk, etc all the time. Better to catch it the rug.

no one cares. just put the damn carpet on the rug. it'll be a good way to weed out the picky women. they'll go "eww, a rug on a carpet! how tackay!" and you'll be like "eww, get lost"... and so you will be a happy man for you will not become deeply attached to an annoying OC nutter.

Carpet is evil and an unnecessary health risk. Get rid of both.

Only if the carpet matches the drapes.
