So we weren't sure if it would rain today so we took our water bikes. Gina rode her Bianchi roadie and I rode my MTB with the knobbies. We did a decent pace throughout the ride. Had a little headwind but didn't seem windy IMO. Last couple of times I rode the mTB, I figured Gina would kick my arse since I was on knobs. But I have been watching my diet and down 13 lbs and feeling good. So last ride I was shocked at how good I felt and Gina had a hard time keeping up, mostly due to the headwind I figured.
So we take a break 22 miles into the ride and kick it at our usual spot at the coast. Some dude ona roadie rides up and rests a bit too. After a while we leave and not ore than 1/4 mile form the beach the dude goes flying by us. No biggie, we are re-warming the legs and I'm on an MTB. Gina had just split her tire and I had to place a boot in it, so I wasn't concerned about speed. I see the guy pull away, maybe 300 yards, but don't much attention to the situation...NOT YET!:p
After I realize Gina's tire will manage, we lift the pace a bit to a comfy speed, maybe 18. Not more than 3 or 4 miles down the road we catch up to the guy. I'm not racing, just pacing. I really don't care what his speed is..YET!:p
So he pulls a little stunt, one of my pet peeves. I ring my incred-i-bell as we prepare to pass on by, also a polite "onyerleft". As I start to pass, he picks up the pace and forces me to stay on the wrong side of the trail. This always pisses me off! I can' figure why a rider just can't let you pass if he's slower. I guess he figures he's fast cause he's on a roadie. So I sort of sit up like "WTF" as I see riders approaching from the opposite direction. Just then he says "you're doing a good pace for a mountain bike". then stomps on the pedals.
He pulls away, maybe 30 yards ahead but I see him bobbing his head. What does that mean? He can't keep it up! So I hold my pace and sure enough his pace slows while mine remains consistent and uhhh....faster!:D
Now the weight I've dropped is really showing it's face and I feel good so we roll on by again. I just look at him and smile as he returns a look like "I'm in trouble now". We roll by so he takes our wheels. At this point I know he's a cheeser! I lift the pace to maybe 20 but Gina can't hang on my wheel as we hit a double underpass. Darn, I didn't want todrop her so I start to slow. I look back and the cheeser is on her wheel. Now I know his a BIG CHEESER! Whenever I get into a friendly comp, if the guy can't hang, he'll jump Gina's wheel knowing I will slow for her to return to my wheel.
But I'm on knobbies so I'm thinking he will chase me but nope, cheeser stays on Gina's wheel till she pulls back up to my wheel. Then he decides to race around after a breather. I know Gina was suffering but says,"go ahead, I won't be far behind".The guy pulls away but yesiree, here I come suckuh!
So I catch the guy again, let him take my wheel then pic up the pace to 24 mph. I'm breathing hard but the legs feel great and I'm a flying! It's hurting but I want to see what the cheeser has. Maybe 100 yards later the cheeser can't keep the pace so I pull away then drastically slow down to wait for Gina. I let him go by then smile as he does. He didn't even look at me this time.
I let Gina catch back up then lift the pace again. Maybe another 2 miles and I see him again....I lift the pace abit more and right before we catch up again, he turns off the trail! Yeah, I thought so!
Yup, I'm dropping weight, trying to get back in shape and I plan to kick some arse in June on an organized climing event. YES, I am full of testosterone but that's how I get my fun!;)
"Nice pace for a mountain bike". Next time I expect him to say, "nice pace for a roadbike":p
