Hey guys,

I'm looking for a light to be used as an auxiliary light to supplement generator lights for touring and long distance biking. I'd like the light to have the following characteristics:

less than $50 (under $30 would be even better)
should use common batteries or other power source that can be found in any rural area
should be sturdy and as bullet proof as possible
should provide enough light by itself to go about 15mph at night

I was thinking about this Romisen Cree flashlight (http://www.shiningbeam.com/servlet/the-53/Romisen-RC-dsh-N3-CREE-Q5/Detail). Is there anything better than that which meets my requirements?

Yes, this one:

UltraFire WF-606A Cree Q5 (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14909)

Better still, fit two of them.

The Planet Bike Blaze 1w (http://www.modernbike.com/itemgroup.asp?igpk=2126176973&TID=367) is a good choice, possibly one of the best choices if you're looking for traditional bike lights rather than converted flashlights. You can get more light out of a Deal Extreme flashlight at that price point, but this light is probably more reliable than them. Also, it's got an awesome flash mode (the best I've ever seen), if you're into flash modes.

As for producing enough light to go 15 mph, I'd say probably yes. But it's not so much light that you can still see well after an on-coming car ruins your night vision -- but I'm not sure any 1 watt light provides enough light for that.

I own the Romisen.
Remember it only has ONE mode, HIGH.
Batteries will run about 1:45 - 2 hours.
Its not a lightweight, but will do the job.

I would feel safer with 2 of them and fishblock mount.
NOTE: This light my become too heavy if mounted to your helmet.

Maybe, the dinnotte may better serve your needs when they go on sale again for $100.

Good Luck
