Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - First fixie ride...impressions

schwinnbikelove generously donated her 1965 Schwinn Varsity fixed gear to me today, so naturally I took it for a ride. Everything went fine! It isn't anything too difficult, and it sure is fun. A few little mishaps came when I tried to stand up and coast over bumps, but those are just old habits. I really need to put on some toe clips, because when I tried to coast, my foot got thrown. Fixed gear is really where its at.

Welcome to the fold, i broke my coasting habit in the first week. As for pedals, my winter fix has downhill platform pedals, so i can ride it with my big winter boots. My summer fix is still brake-less, but i do have my look pedals mounted...

So have you decided to buy or build your own? ;)

She's been moving, and like all us college kids, busy as hell with school.

Thats actually the lead singer of the Dropkick Murphys, who regularly wear Bruins jerseys in concert. I saw them in Detroit and he was wearing one.

The bike is working out great, and it is a TANK! Its fun knowing that I am riding a 40 year old bike that won't let me coast. I rode about 15 miles yesterday, and really didn't use the brake at all. The gearing is perfect for pankcake like Bowling Green. The only slip-up I had was a sad attempt to coast over railroad tracks, that almost launched me OTB...ah well, live and learn. Happy riding!!
