I rode to RBM to hang a bit before riding out....parked the bike....and stepped off a curb to the accompaniment of a wet popping noise in back of my left knee.

I had talked myself into riding with the Team in Training group for an easy 15 miler, but it wasn't to be.
10 feet of riding in the parking lot was enough to convince me to catch a ride home with my wife.

If the knee is still wonky tomorrow, I'll make an appointment with the Ortho. :twitchy::notamused:

Wet pop doesn't sound like a good thing, I'd go to your Ortho either way and get checked out.

Dude, those kind of sounds are not good. Go see a dr., don't risk some kind of permanent injury.

That's very good advice.

I now have an appointment with the Ortho on Wednesday morning.
Sitting and getting back up are more "interesting" than I really like.
I can walk fairly painlessly with a cane
(with the occasional "twinge" that jumps up and screams, "BOOOGA-BOOOGA!" at importune moments).

Missed work yesterday with the R.I.C.E., but I'll be making the attempt to work tonight.
(fingers crossed)

Dude, that sucks! Try to get yourself well. Don't forget to elevate your leg.

JTGYK, you're stealing my Schtick. Bodily destruction is my area of expertise. STOP THAT!

What time is your appointment on Wednesday? I need to be over your way again late morning, on Wednesday.

No reply back from the dude with the wheels. Dunno what's up there. I still have the the 2200 hubbed 36spokes that are uber cheap if you want to take a look. I need to bring the seat post too.

I have to go the Sprint store there at Coit and Campbell for their repair center. I will most likely end up at BM while waiting for teh work to be done.

Tuesday is the regular Doc for me cuz of an inner ear infection.

Dude! Sorry about the ear infection. Those really suck.

Go ahead and bring your wheels if you will...I've been driving myself crazy looking at wheels and just want to get the job done.
I had narrowed it down to these three:

Well the verdict is "ACL tear and meniscus tear"

The MRI tomorrow will let us see how bad it is.

:( Hopefully the damage isn't too bad and you'll be back riding soon.

I've got an appointment w/ a sports medicine Dr. today for my own knee problem. I'm looking forward to hopefully finding an answer, but I'm also a little afraid of what he might find.

Ugh. Hit me up with a PM on who your doc is. I've got lot's of experience in this area and the wifey works in the OR department at Medical Center Plano. She knows all the the cool Orthopods.

WooHoo! WooHoo!

The MRI came back with no need for surgery!
Minor ACL involvement (positive push-pull twist test) and meniscus looks good.
Apparently I managed to break up a bone spur from arthritis and it was grinding around in there until I started breaking it down...so cortisone and some supplementary exercises and I can start ---gently---working back on the bike.

Um...did I say...

WOOO--HOOOO!!!!???

Excellent news!

Can I interest you in a nice case of the flu? I don't really like the one I have.

Good news indeed! As someone who's quite familiar with ACL reconstructon, you don't want to go down that road. Heal up fast and then ride!

Great news about the knee. Your idea of "fine" is weird, though. You get around fine "with a cane"? You are an iron man.

Take it easy with the rehab. Or...if you are like me, make sure to rest up extra hard after every time that you push it too hard.

I know that you have probably heard all of this before, but one of the best things that helps me with my knees these days is really working on balancing all of the muscles from the hips down. It seems to work for all of the people at my sports-ortho doctor, and a handful of people at my gym as well.

Most of my knee issues are due to a combination of genetics and muscle imbalance. I used to power-lift weights when I was younger, and mostly hike and bicycle these days. That made my outer quads, hamstrings, and gluts MUCH more powerful in relation to my inner-leg and outer-hip muscles. That imbalance caused my hip and knee to track at an awkward angle, and to put undue stress on parts of my knee joint and ligaments. What exercises you do, depends on where the imbalance is.

So, the doctor put me on a workout regime that strengthened my inner thighs, side and front hip flexors, and included lots of stretching, and exercises that put an emphasis on body-balance (side-lunges with dumbbells, lunges onto a bosun ball, etc.). It takes a little bit of work, but the benefits are worth it. My knees are not perfect, but they don't slow me down or stop me anymore. I still have times, once per year or so, where I have to eat ibuprophen, and ice-up for a day or two, but that is about it. No more crutches, canes, knee-scopes, etc. So far.

I know one guy that has to work on his hamstrings, calves, and gluts for his knee troubles; and another that only has to do MAJOR IT band stretching exercises to keep their knee problems manageable. It all depends on what is wrong, and where the imbalance is. But it seems to work better than most of the other approaches that I've seen for keeping you active while you live with knee issues.
