This is a good story and it shows you how the motorcar takes the life out of our cities. Look at the picture below and tell me what city would not want that massive crowd of humanity every day of the week? What a massive stimulus it would be to the shopping district to have all those customers on the streets every day of the week.
Think about it, we wouldn't need a trillion dollar stimulus package. Just get rid of the cars and you create a massive block party!

Is that photo from New Westminster? I can't read the signs. If the photo isn't from the time and place discussed in the article, and they don't discuss the photo's provinance, isn't that lying just like the TV news does?

No, that is not New West. I wondered about that photo also.
New Westminister is just outside Vancouver and I lifted this blurb off its official web site:
New Westminster is located in the geographical centre of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, or GVRD, making travel easy to all the surrounding communities whether by the excellent transit system or by automobile. New Westminster is connected through SkyTrain, a light rapid transit system, to Vancouver by a 25 minute trip. With the recent announcement by the GVRD and the Provincial Government, New Westminster will be connected to Coquitlam by SkyTrain in the next few years. Tranlink bus service also plays a helpful role in moving people in and around the region. A major bus terminal is located in New Westminster at Eighth Street.
Seems like it follows in the footsteps of Vancouver which probably the most progressive city in North America in terms of dealing with urban sprawl. Of course, being ringed by mountains probably pushes you in that direction, but nice to see that someone has their idea caps on...
