Road Cycling - anyone using a aero bar?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i've been searching for some aero bars for my sirrus. thus far i've found this model from performance which is by far the lightest. Syntace C2 Clip Ultralite Aero Bar (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/large_photo.cfm?SKU=83&Store=Bike)
is there any other brand of aero bar that you would recommend and is light weight?

Thee best I've heard of have been the C2 as you mentioned, the Visiontech carbon bar (http://www.coloradocyclist.com/common/products/productdisplay2_v2.cfm?PRRFNBR=32406&CGRFNBR=595&CRPCGNBR=595&CI=1,225,485,595&TextMode=0), the Deda carbon bar (http://www.coloradocyclist.com/common/products/productdisplay2_v2.cfm?PRRFNBR=29574&CGRFNBR=595&CRPCGNBR=595&CI=1,225,485,595&TextMode=0), and if you're into extremely light, exotic, and expensive, the Schmolke carbon bar (http://www.schmolke-carbon-titan.de/carbon/carbon_uk/index_c_uk.html)
Aero bars on a cirrus? First get a road bike then ask the question.
Find of like putting a turbocharger on a scooter.

thanks bigfloppy. the schmolke looks to be to lightest! however, that's just too much for me.. hehe. so looks like teh C2 is a good choice then. thanks for your help!

Ouch ewitz...i think him putting aero bars on his sirrus is perfectly fine. It gives him another position to ride in. Just because someone has aero bars doesnt mean they are gunna race or need the aerodyanmic position. Just another place to put the hands and get comfortable

thank you hammerthehill! when i saw the post, i just ignored it. and yes... the reason why i thought about the aero bar was because someone else on this forum has a 2001 sirrus and has the profile aero bar on his bike. thus today when i was out riding.. i tried to rest my arms on the handle bar.. and it felt pretty good. it looks like performance bike will be getting those around may 15.. seems like there's a shortage or something.

Try Colorado Cyclist, I just ordered my C2 last week...and by the way, I used to ride my Sirrus with my arms on the bar often in long descents with no traffic hazzards, an aero bar would be a definate asset to a Sirrus.

thanks stealthman! i've noticed that as well.. during a descent.. it's very comfortable position!

Hey,
You might not be able to find these around since i haven't had any luck when I've tried but I currently have an aero bar combination(i have no idea what to call it, it's an aerobar and bar ends in one really) on my mountain bike.
http://webuser.bus.umich.edu/tle/bike.jpg
The picture isn't the best but it's standard curved bar ends that continue in front of the handlebar and in the middle go up in a '^' shape that mimic where the grip portion
of the aerobars would go. I absolutely love it, since i can use the down position holding onto the bars along with all the other positions on the bar. I never ride offroad anyway, and am about to replace the bike as it's starting to reach the end of its lifespan. The sirrus models (though i think the road warrior 800 looks really sharp) are ones I've been looking at in addition to road bikes, and if I did get a flat bar bike I would definitely transfer the aerobar to the new bike.

sweet.. i think what you have there is a profile bar. you are right the C2 has been hard to come by. i've checked out many stores and they are all waiting for new shipment. they either only have large or small, but based on their fitment, i would be a medium. i've checked at REI and they have a Profile Ironman, but cost is $150. but it's carbon fiber... but still feels very heavy. guess i'll have to wait for the C2.
as for getting a new bike Moomins, i don't regret getting the sirrus. it fit my budget and it was a road bike that provided the comfort and a slight feel of mt. bike with the handle bar. when i looked at the sirrus and compared the geo.. it's pretty similar to the allez only the headtube is off by 1 degree and made of different material. therefore, for me it's more of a road bike. u should try riding it.. you won't regret it. for the price of $500 u can't beat that with a bat. the components on there isn't the best, but it isn't the worse either. i just get sad when it gets dirty.. guess that happens to white bikes.. hehe :d

Woaa. I'm lucky, I must have got one of the last mediums! CC was the only place I could find that had the medium. I thought long and hard about the Deda, but after seeing it in person I got the feeling it took away the top bar hand position. With the C2 I think I'll still have it and if not you can get lifters to lift the arm rests farther off the bar.

i have a questions, is this part welded together? or can you split them wider? cuz i have my wireless computer there and also the center of my sirrus bar goes from fat to narrow.

Not sure if it's welded or not, but it does appear to have some sort of bridge between the two bars. Mounting a computer is relatively easy with this little thing (http://www.syntace.com/02_produkte/detail.cfm?artid=367). Not sure what you can do about your oversized bars though (31.8mm vs a "normal" 26mm) since syntace's site appears to only offer a 26mm clamp version.

Right on! I am not now nor will I ever be a racer, but I am considering aero bars for my Zurich such to have another position, especially on long straightaways.

I believe the picture shows a bar between the aero bars for display purposes, they should not be attached (you can however attach them at the bar end with a little aero doohicky thing). Also I was mistaken, I ordered from Nashbar and they still appear to have the medium per their website.

sweet.. i'm gonna call them up now and see...
EDIT: doh.. have to pay tax! in that case i'm gonna have to check it out first at performance to see the real thing before buying it.

yup yup.. i'm going to use my dial calipers tonight to check the diameter. then when i go to performance to see the actual unit.. i'm going to measure it as well.
oh that little computer mount is going to look so sexy!! definitely getting that as well!!!
I just want to give everyone here a BIG THANK YOU for your help. I've just placed my order with Trisports.com (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=51383). Most of all, I found a 15% coupon for them as well.. so now I'm just waiting for my bar to arrive!!!
