Ive been riding a road cycle for about 6 months now and have been noticing my right foot cramping after a couple miles of heavy pedaling.. Ive read that it may be because of me pointing my toes downward while pedaling. I grew up riding a mountain bike and BMX so I became very conditioned to the aggressive position and lifting from the seat for climbs so I fear it will be hard to break this habit... any suggestions, tips or tricks on breaking this habit?

I don't know how to break the habit, but I do wonder what kind of shoes you are wearing. I had really bad foot cramps so I bit the bullet on bought real cycling shoes. The cramps and numbness went away instantly. Just a thought if you are riding without decent shoes.

Im wearing my regular sketchers. my pedal clips are pretty loose.. I lowered my seat a bit cause I noticed the further I lean forward the the more I point my toes... hopefully I can grab some decent comfy shoes for riding and Ill be all set...
+1 on it possibly being a shoe problem. I was having some foot numbness issues until I got a pair of stiff soled cycling shoes.

my one problem with buying a pair of shoes specifically for cycling is that I commute to work as a waiter on my bike 4 miles each way. adding a pair of stiff shoes to walking around waiting tables for 5 hours is not a great solution either and it would add an extra 2 things in my backpack to change into before and after work each day...is there a happy medium?
Can you stash a pair of shoes somewhere at work?
Maybe change the shoes that you work in? I usually wear a pair of Doc Martens when I'm going to be riding around the neighborhood in jeans. They're comfortable enough for me to wear when I'm going to be on my feet all day, but the soles aren't as squishy as sneakers.

Switch to hiking shoes or boots. Sketchers, if I understand correctly, are sneakers with little or no stiffness to the sole. Hiking shoes and boots will have a stiffer sole, and be walkable.
If you want to get an even stiffer sole, try the Sette Rival II shoes from Price Point. I've worn them on long bike tours which included a lot of walking. They are comfortable.

I use platform (IE, rubber block) pedals. Occasionally, I'll have foot cramps, where it feels like my toes are trying to curl down. That happens when I've been pedaling with the arch of my foot on the pedal. Just moving the ball of my foot over the pedal for a few strokes takes care of it. Don't know if that helps you any, though.
