Advocacy & Safety - Any Santa Rosa, CA. Critical Mass type rides?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hiya! I was just wondering if there was any type of cycle rides that go on around the Santa Rosa California area. It would be a lot of fun to have one in Santa Rosa, as I would love to go to the San Francisco rides but sometimes that's just too far for me. So if there are any rides that go on in that area let me know... if not... who's down to start one up? Spread the word! We could start at the Santa Rosa Junior College on Mendocino Ave.

P.S. NOT A CRITICAL MASS RIDE... sorry for using that name when I had no intention of doing any of the pointless things they do. ^_^

It seems ironic to start such a ride at a school of higher education.

A local bike shop might have group rides.

Not the forum to mention CM on - a number of the members here, including me, question whether they remotely come under the heading of "advocacy."

-Kurt

P.S.: From our local CM. I refuse to participate:

They want to advocate their non-rights to cause havoc and tie up traffic for all vehicle users, whether it be motor or human powered.

The local advocacy group decided not to participate in a discussion in a meeting regarding eminent domain for widening a local road that has been used by cyclists for decades. The meeting turned into a bike bashing free-for-all anyway. I think the last thing we need is something along the lines of CM.

Well actually I would just want a ride with a good amount of people without all the crazy stupid stuff. I don't like that people perpously cause havic for no reason but I do like how many people get involved in the ride... maybe not as much people as one of the NYC rides... but yeah... So basically just a big group ride through Santa Rosa... NOT Critical Mass! Sorry for not getting my point across clearly.

I left a reply on what I meant by the ride.

In other words, a Critical Manners ride? No unnecessary filtering, compliance with the law, and no red-light running?

This could be a description of almost any group/shop 'training ride' on my stretch of A1A.

yeah... sure... that works hahaha. I can't promise anything about the red light running part though, I'm already too used to doing that back when I was commuting in Orange County. It may not be right and it may not be safe but I still did it and I did it only when there weren't any cars around. I'm not trying to justify my actions but some lights won't change anyway unless there's a car sitting at it so it would be pointless to wait.

My recommendation for you....

99.95% of lights will trip if you position your bike on the actuator cable. Try it where two lines come together. If that fails try to get your city or DOT to adjust them.

If you stay against the curb where you should not be to begin with than no they will not change. Of course you will soon be killed by a right turning truck (ala portland) so I guess enjoy life while you still can.

No, that's a right, not a non-right. :p

Oh I will for sure enjoy my life while I still can, isn't that what everyone should do? The rides that I go on as of lately don't have any stop lights anyway so don't worry ^_^ I am very aware, always have been, when driving and riding motorcycles or bikes so the chances are slim that I will get hit by someone turning right while I am going through a red. Not to mention I already said I don't usually run lights when their are cars around, I only do it when the roads are completely empty... as in I can't see any cars on the road for a long ways off. Thanks for the tip though, I'll defonately try that the next time I'm riding on the road and there aren't any cars around to trip the light.

I think it would be great to get some people together and have a regular meeting riders group a few days a week. I'm so down. Anthonybrumley@gmail.com

there was something along the lines of a critical manners/fun ride a while back that left from community market. It was on Mondays at 9:00pm so traffic would be lighter. It may be only a fair weather thing. Community Market is right by the JC just off of Mendocino Ave behind the Last Record Store.

Check in there and they could probably tell you the status.

Sounds good, so far that would be three people... hahaha. Do you know anyone else that would be down? Also where do you live and what's your available days?

hahaha I'm right there with ya! ^
I guess I'll check in some time to see what's going on with that, I'd rather stick to day rides for now though

I have never done this ride. I think it might be in the summer only. Check out Community Market. Great place to shop (except for meat and alcohol :thumb:).

As far as orginized rides there is SR cycling club and the bike shops on college ave might have info on rides.

Also, if you can afford it you should think of joining the Sonoma County Bike coalition. Most of the bike shops give you a 10% discount on stuff so I find the membership pays for itself. They have and do a lot for the biking community.

Good luck.

Jeff
