Commuting - First Commute Tomorrow

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well, tomorrow morning I take the plunge -- my first ever bike commute since my college days. I just got back from taking my clothes for week and other supplies to the office. I did a practice run a couple of weeks ago -- 8.5 miles one-way, should take just a bit over 30 minutes. Weather for tomorrow looks good, and my bike is prepped and ready. I'm committed, but nervous. Particularly nervous about my co-workers reaction when they see me wheel into (and out of) the office in full roadie gear.
Wish me luck.

Nearly 17mph in commuting traffic? Bloody fast!
Screw your co-workers reactions, the ladies will be too busy checking out your calves.... :)

I go into work at 6:00 a.m., so there's hardly anyone on the roads.
Hey good luck! I commute daily 6.5 mile one way. You won't regret it!
Over the winter I got more comments from co-workers than I do now. Of course, we have snow and very cold weather up here. Now, I just catch the ladies in the office taking discrete peeks at my legs. The comments I get now are more of, "Boy Bob, your gonna get blown away by this wind." or "Wow sure is a great day to ride."
I think you may be supprised by the fact that most people won't even actually give you a second thought. If they do give you a hard time, enjoy it! You are doing something to improve your health. Are they?

It will become the highlight of your day. I've had all positive feedback from my coworkers. Make sure you allow some cool down time, wipe the sweat off and comb your hair.
Good luck and enjoy!

Good luck for the commute!
You may be aprehensive about the first couple of times, but pretty quickly you won't even think about it. Bike commuting has become part of my routine these days, and I wonder why I never started earlier!
I've had very positive feedback from all of my co-workers, too, except for one homophobic moron who can't deal with seeing a guy in lycra.

Update:
Made it into work without incident. Beautiful, crisp morning. Fun ride in. So far, I'm loving it.
Only one co-worker has made a comment about my bike so far, and it was a positive one. :)

:D Great ride!
My experience commutting, I always enjoyed the ride in, people weren't in such a hurry to get to work as they were to get home after work, especially on Fridays. I made Fridays my logistics day and didn't ride, this was the day I changed out clothes and such.

Good going!
I remember when I used to drive to work that I thought my place of employment was located fairly far from home. Now that I bike every day, I think that it is much too close.

congradulations! welcome to the tribe. you will learn a lot in the first few weeks. take care and remember it's better to be safe than fast. it's hard to remember that sometimes in the middle of a ride. If in doubt take the safer route and be extra cautious. live and learn.
cheers,
CD
