What kind of quality can one expect for a mountain bike in the $350.00 range?

At that price, you can only expect the base model, bottom-of-the-line MTB from one of the major brands. It will be perfectly serviceable but every $50-100 you go up makes noticeable jumps in the parts spec. Ex: Giant Boulder is in this price range.

Aluminum rigid frame with a cheap pos boat achor of a crappy fork.

Wheels that are both heavy and easy to get out of true.

Super cheap mechanical disc brakes

do some hunting around, for 350 your better off getting a used ride,(assuming you have some mechanical knowledge and wouldnt have to pay a shop for every little thing)

i picked up my 07 rock hopper for 350, it needs a paint job, and a new set of cables(maybe chain) but over all it was a good deal (retailed for close to 800 new)
