How do you guys get relaxed after a ride. It seems to take a couple hours for my heartrate to go back down to normal. I could not sleep last night because of it. Thoughts, ideas?

What I've been doing lately is about 30 minutes of stretching after a ride. I am using a book called "Stretching" (catchy, eh?) by Bob Anderson (www.stretching.com). He's "the man" when it comes to stretching, and he has 2 bike-specific routines that are pretty good (although all of the stretches in the book are beneficial).
I have found that not only do I relax more quickly after stretching, but that I have fewer comfort "complaints" on the bike as well.

Hot tub (or hot bath), and a cold beer(just one)!

I second the hot bath. 30 minuts as hot as you can take.

mmmm......fat tire......
Grumpy's for happy meal. Cheesburger, fries, and schooner of Fat Tire Amber Ale (32oz.) Absolutely the worst thing you can do but oh so fun.

Normally a bit of stretching, followed by a shower and a beer (usually a Fat Tire - Colorado Microbrew).

Hmmm...interesting. Ironically, it is vigorous exercise like cycling that tends to reduce my heartrate and promote relaxation, at least temporarily. No better feeling of release than shortly after a hard ride, when you can climb back in your car and feel the healthy sweat and the muscles relaxing.
Then again, I can do weights in the evening and have no problem falling asleep - whereas other people get invigorated by exercise and cannot fall asleep. So everyone's different.
I seriously doubt there is a medical "problem", but I'd mention it to your doc at your next visit, see what he/she thinks. I know from personal past experience that stress can sometimes increase heart rate, for example.
That is odd because my heart rate usually stays pretty low. In fact, if I'm in a draft and I just let it go, my heart rate drops to near resting even at around 18-20mph.
After a long ride, I'll eat a big lunch and either sit around watching tv or walk around, do chores, etc. Sometimes I like to take a nap.

Here is how I relax! Right at home.
ATTN: Underwear Nazi. I do NOT wear underwear in the hot tub. In fact, I wear nothing at all! Thought you would approve.
A hot shower followed by a few Coopers Stouts. That's relaxing for me.
CHEERS.

it's a really, really fantastic beer, that, as far as i know, you can't get on the east coast. i tried and tried but couldn't find it. you CAN, however, get gallon jugs of ipswitch ale fairly cheaply and it's almost the same thing.

And the fine company of your S.O.!
I usaully go to work as soon as I wake up.. Yes, it varies from 7am~9am.. But I do not get home until 11:30pm~midnight.
My rides are scheduled, usually from 3pm to 6pm. That would mean, after the ride I still have 5hrs of work ahead of me.
So, I guess my answer would be....... work.....? :)

goto bike forums but stay out of the politic/religion ;)
Hi heart rate seems wierd to me after a ride. I notice mine drops? If your training I would avoid the beer thing and go for a sport drink, something to replinish what you just lost so you can recover better. On real hard rides I often will eat the hell out of anything and then sleep for like an hour or so, it just hits me like a ton of bricks.

Well, I'm still in college so it's usually 4:20 time when I get done after a hard ride. It makes a nice hot shower that much more enjoyable. I really wouldn't mind a hot tub in my house though. Something to look forward to from working so hard I suppose. Peace.
Stretching for sure, and some deep, relaxing breathing. Just lie in the 'corpse position' like in yoga, on your back with your limbs relaxed, and do pelvic breathing. Also a nice, steamy shower. I like it so hot I get parboiled. A nice cold beer is also good.
If you're having trouble sleeping, you may be riding too close to your bedtime. Exercising too late in the day can cause you to have trouble sleeping.

Beer, food, possibly more beer, a shower... then the relaxation is over as the "honey do's" kick in and I'm working on the house again...
peanut butter and jelly sandwich, hot shower, sex.

Heheheh....just kidding. And you didn't think I had a sense of humor.
What you do in the privacy of your hot tub is of no concern to me.

Just clean the hair trap regularly.
