Last week in Dahlonega, GA at the Tour de Georgia I ran across an author (Dave Shields) signing copies of his new cycling novel, The Race. I have no profressional or personal connection with Mr Shields, the publisher, etc.

I took the book with me on a business trip last Wednesday and just finished it last night. The only other cycling fiction that has kept me this involved is The Yellow Jersey by Ralph Hurne. This is a great book!

The story is about a young boy in Utah who lives with his stern but loving Dad. He gets interested in bicycle riding and racing but his father disapproves. None the less, his talent takes him to the national and international level. Much of the action takes place on L'alp du Huez. I was impressed with how insightful and well crafted the writing was...and frankly, how Shields could write this many chapters about just one stage. You can tell the author is an athlete and is personally acquainted with some of the suffering that can take place on a bike. In reality, Dave told me he is more of a tri-athlete than just a cyclist. Maybe his next book will focus on The IronMan?

On a 1-10 scale I'd give this book a 9.9. However my criticisms would all be pretty subjective.

If you're looking for a great summer read, especially with the TDF coming up....I think you'll love this one. Nice job Mr. Shields!

Thanks for all the nice comments smoore, and thanks especially for letting others know what you thought of "The Race." I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope that the sequel will earn me that extra one tenth of a percent in rating. I've got my work cut out for me.

I hope you had as good a time at the TdG as I did.

p.s. For anyone who is interested "The Race" has recently begun selling at all bookstores. If they don't have a copy in stock you can definitely order it. Amazon is even offering copies at a 30% discount.

most of the time, i'd rather be cycling.

I love writing (though I won't bore you with all the reasons). I also love cycling (though I don't need to explain the reasons for that to you). What could be better, then, than writing about cycling?

The coolest letters I'm getting from readers so far are those that say things like, "I've always been a football fan. I had no idea cycling was so intense. I can't wait to watch a race." I'm on a mission to convert enough new fans to this sport that we'll never have to go without television coverage of our favorite events again. Long live OLN!

Hi Steve,
I just received a message from you through my Web form but you didn't leave an e-mail address so I have no way to reply except to go here and hope you see the message. If you'd like a signed copy of the book for a friend you can purchase it at http://www.DaveShields.com/OldCover.html

Thanks for your interest in the book and also for your help in making others aware of it. In order for an unknown author to break through it takes the help of a lot of people like yourself. I appreciate it more than I can say.
