Well, it went something like this…

Up at 0430 because it’s a 2-hour drive. They just had to send us off at 0730. They couldn’t wait until 0800? After getting turned around, I finally find the place, register, and get my bike off of the rack. I look at my watch and notice that it is 0730. I ride the 200 yards to the start/finish and ask the guy how much time until the start, hoping that they are running late. They weren’t. He responded, “About a minute and a half.” It’s rainy, windy, cold, and I have all of 200 yards of warm-up. I figure that I can suffer for 45 minutes no problem... Problem is, there is this hill they call the pack splitter. We started and the pace was fairly fast. After about 12 minutes or my fourth or fifth trip up Mr. Splitter, I knew that this was going to hurt. I was taking longer and longer to recover from the hill. About 28 minutes into the race, my legs just wouldn’t work anymore. I kept asking for more, and they kept saying, “Screw you buddy!” So I abandoned. I packed up my bike and started the drive home. I looked on the seat next to me, and there was my breakfast!! I had also forgotten to eat.

I sure hope I learned something from this.

Rode at Eagle Creek, eh? :D

We had a ton of guys in our shop looking for clothes. Many people with wet shoes and cold feet. Lousy day to race.

I ride that loop almost every day as part of my regular ride over there..it's not that bad... ;)

Too bad they don't put you guys on the big hill on the parkway. about a quarter mile of 15-20% grade. the tri and duathletes use that road.

Long way to drive to learn, but that's what it's all about...

Hope you had fun anyway. :D

Come back for the circle road fast crit...

that grand prix motorcar....it was a Minardi??? :D :D

I am following a 90 minute rule if it takes longer than that I cough up the cash for a hotel room. You may be able to share rooms sometimes to save cash. Two weeks ago I had some registration issues that kept me running late so I did'nt get any coffee in me. I'm a junkey so at about 1:00 O'clock in the race I started feeling a head ache. I showed up to a cross race last year just at start time and with no warm up I nearley died, not only is it cold but you run 100% from start to finish ouch. Anyway hope you had fun...

sorry to hear that, but I'm sure you've learned a lot and will not make the same mistakes again. Hopefully I'll be able to join you at Eagle Creek for the next crit.

That sounds familiar. About a month ago, I set out to go to a road race on the Maryland eastern shore. I figured if I left 3.5 hours early, I'd get there in plenty of time. What I didn't realize was that many of the major roads in northern Va. have two speeds... 85mph or stopped. Mostly stopped. (Dumb stuff... like somebody stopped by the police in the opposite direction, but I digress). Long story short, I arrived just as my event was supposed to be starting. But, due to the number of crashes in earlier events (two people had to be air-lifted to the hospital) the remaining events were cancelled. For my trouble I got bottle of Hammer Gel, worth about 1/2 my gas expenditure. The trip home took even longer.

JF's 90 minute rule sounds about right, IMO.

90 minute rule sound like a good idea. I have decided that I will not abandon another race. I’ll just keep going until they pull me out.
