I am getting neck stiffness when I ride my road bike for a long period of time. It occurs in normal position of holding onto the brake hoods. I first thought it was normal since I am stretched out and looking up to see straight down the road but now I am not so sure. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

How long have you been riding? How long with this bike? Did you get professionally fit? What is the height difference between the top of your seat and the top of your bars? How flexible are you?

Depending on your fitness level and your experience with this bike, it may be that your bars are too low. If you are a casual rider and your bars are 5 inches below your seat, you could be in for a lot of pain. If they are 1 - 2 inches apart, then it probably isn't that.

I found that if I tilt my head slightly to the side, and alternate sides every few minutes, that it eases strain on the neck. Also, I have been employing routines outlined in the Bob Anderson book "Stretching". The added flexability has has helped quite a bit.

Just some suggestions -- good luck!
