Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Got stung on the head by a bee

Less than a quarter mile from my house on this afternoon's commute I felt something go though the vent on my helmet and hit me in the head. At first I thought someone threw something at me and had amazing aim.

But then it started stinging pretty badly. When I got home I had my wife look at my head and sure enough there was a stinger stuck in noggin. It's been a long time since I have been stung be a bee, but at least I didn't die or anything.

Anyone else been stung on a bike or had other run ins with bugs?

Yappers I got the same thing last summer a bee wacked me got right in a vent !

Are you one of these shaved head type guys? If so, yeah, you're bee bait.

I was riding home from a ride in the fall and got hit in the gut by something, followed by a tremendous amount of pain. Nearly enough to put me down. I got stung by a wasp. Took several hours for the pain to diminish, and it didn't really go away until the next day.

I've taken a few big bugs (even a bee) through the vents. Just stop, remove, shake out. Never been stung.

My wife, however, managed to get a bee just under the bottom of her sunglasses that did sting her. She is mildly allergic, so it looked like she had gone a few rounds in the ring with Ali after the swelling came up. Someone at her office even took her aside to say that she 'didn't have to put up with this and could report it', but my wife didn't work out what this other woman was saying until later!

Getting stung while riding is all dramatic and everything sure. Been there, done that.

What I hate is a really heavy lovebug season when you have thousands of those little black copulating bugs flying around. Don't dare enjoy the ride, or smile and say howdy to the other folks on the MUP. June bugs flying at you head on when you're trying to ride like you stole it can hurt to.

Ya I swallowed a few bugs last year ! And Iam sure I will this year :D

Seems getting stung by bees or bitten by wasps is not uncommon. My friends, my pop and I usually get bit at least a few times each season, but we all ride on trails that run through the woods which may add to our chances.

Last year, I stopped wearing the bright bike shirts and had fewer such encounters. In fact, the only time I was bitten last year was in the fall while wearing my bright yellow PI jacket.

That's nothing, peace of cake. Try bee in your motorcycle helmet doing 100 mph:)

June bugs.....they feel like golf balls at speed. Still, I prefer that over bee stings.

The farms near my ride have added bee boxes to the fields to help pollination. I'm sure it is a matter of time. btw anbesol helps with take away the pain in bee stings, numbs you right up.

After a bee incedent a couple years ago, I've taken to wearing a cap under my helmet year 'round. I know that a bee could still sting me though a thin layer of sweaty cotton, but for some reason I feel more secure wearing it.

Got one in the neck three decades ago. Ouch.
Wasp stings feel like someone is perpetually hammering a finishing nail into the stung spot.
Bee poison really screws me up... I've got goosebumps and rushes merely thinking about it

I carry apis in my saddlebag. If I get it in time I'm okay in a few minutes.

I got a bee under my helmet last summer. I'm not allergic, but still removed my helmet in a panic-stricken manner and luckily escaped un-stung.

I to tend to swallow a few bugs here and there, especially around sunset during the fall. My cousin has a T-shirt that says "pedal for protein" and shows a guy on a bike swallowing bugs as he rides.

Not too long ago... Riding home on my commute and a bee flew in my helmet... I think it got stuck in my hair/under the helmet. Stung me in the side of the head OUCH!!!

(when the yellowjackets are at their worst) turned into an amorous affair. All I can figure out is it must have been the moisture that attracted the little devil, but BANG, I got stung in the head--and not the one you're talking about.

Last summer I got hit in the cheek by a bat (not the baseball kind, the vampire kind). Needless to say we were both a little shook up after the encounter.

I was stung about 4 times in 3 months a couple of years back. I couldn't figure out why I had gotten it so much when others around me hadn't. I posted a thread and one reply mentioned deodorant soap. Yep, I take a shower before every ride. It was no biggie but then I started to swell more with each sting!:eek:

Last one on the neck was it! I quit taking a shower after that! I don't have many ride partners now but I don't get stung!:D

Last time I went into a pharmacy about 9pm cause my throat area was swelling a bunch. Lady at the counter said Hydrocotisone 1% would do the trick. I put it on, woke the next morn and all the swelling was gone!:thumb:

Worst sting was on a fast ride. A bee hit my helmet and I thought nothing of it. Little buger crawled down my chinstrap and stung me on the neck (second time on the neck in 2 months:mad:). Bastthurds wouldn't slow down so I kept going too. When I got home 2 hours later, the stinger was still in my neck. Totally dry so I know that sucker unloaded on me!:eek:

Since then I rode thru maybe 3 swarms screaming like Michael Jackson but no stings. Must be the soap!:D

Now whenever something hits my helmet, I take it off and check just to be safe and sure enough, have avoided maybe 3 on the head. Nice thing about riding with no hands!:D

Looks like putting a hair net over the helmet may be in order.

Looks like it is fairly common judging by the rest of the comments. Luckily I'm not allergic.

Three months ago, as a christmas present to myself, I bought a new Rudy Project 'Kompact' helmet on clearance from 'Bike Tires Direct for $50. Really cool looking helmet that came with a built-in net that was part of the liner. At the time I thought it was a nice touch, but not really necessary, but after reading this thread maybe its a good thing I got that helmet. :eek:
