Advocacy & Safety - Help Build a VELODROME

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The local school board where I live is trying to figure out what to do with under enrolled schools. I said make them attractive build a velodrome, share the cost with the county and provide space for the only coop, all in one swoop. Please help write to: schoolbd@arlington.k12.va.us subject should be "velodrome for public schools " - thanks

Sounds like an attempt to use an unrelated problem to push one's own agenda.
I can see a BMX park being a lot more attractive, with an arcade beside it.

We did the BMX and Skate park 3 years ago, people love it. No arcade just a pool and batting cage, putt putt next to it. Using private/public funds to build a facility that the school can use and generate revenue and teach cycling year around instead of thee current "spring time" class? Some parents wanted year around school , you need year around activities.
These folks now a lot about building a velodrome in a short time...

I don't like a whole lot of banking. I'd prefer to see a flat track.
Why not make a half mile flat oval, so it can be shared with track & field events?
I've done lots of experimenting with aerodynamic fairings, so I've ridden on running tracks from time to time. The bike is at it's limit of adhesion on a flat track with a gravel surface.
Typical velodrome banking is too much to get a streamliner going.
Copy a 1/2 mile running track, but pave it, and add a berm to the outside lane edge.
Then we will see some 55MPH recumbent racing.

Fantastic!
"Velodrome" has this archaic, Jules Verne sound to it. Arlington is too much of a 21st century place for it to have much appeal, I think.
