My quick question is: will riding on my trainer for 1/2 hour at HR 130 or so three times a week help build my aerobic base?
I'm not is great shape - ride about 2500 kims per year commuting but I couldn't keep up with you folks. I'd like to do a century this summer. I spent a lot of time here reading posts on aerobic training and read about the 3 hour rides. There's snow on the ground here and besides I don't think I could do a three-hour ride anyway.

It helps build a base assuming you are just starting. It's all relative. If you're in good riding shape, 90 minutes a week won't maintain fitness. But what you're doing is helping you progress and allows you to go to the nexts stpe when it gets warmer and you're outdoors

But..... anything is better than nothing. Don't give up on that workout after work just because it's not Tour De France material. Do what you can, when you can. Too many times, people opt for nothing because they perceive there's not enough time, or it's going to rain an hour from now, or it'll make me ten minutes late for dinner, and on it goes.
Five minutes on the trainer beats five on the couch. Everytime.
But, a good day on cross country skis beats just about everything else in life. There are some good parks near you.

Absolutely. The other thing I like is that you hit the 30 minute mark. I found there to be a huge difference (when running on a treadmill) between 2 miles at 20 minutes and 3 miles at 30 minutes.
A big factor with prolonged excercise is your blood sugar level which drops dramatically after 30 - 45 minutes. We can eat good protein and carbs every day, but during long events like cycling one has to feed the engine or it will eat away at existing tissue, and the readily available tissue is muscle. For more intelligent info on long distance riding and nutrition I will differ to more experienced forum members. Lot's of folk seem to like goop in packets which is one step down from intravenous. I currently prefer food and drink.

Another absolutely. This past month, I've been getting up a little early most mornings, drinking a cup of coffee while reading the news, then putting in 30 minutes of zone 1 (<106 HR for me) on my rollers, then breakfast. That's done an amazing amount of good, considering how easy it was to work it in. It's made my regular program much easier to keep up with. Something to consider.
