Hi,

The freewheel system on my Giant SCR1 seems to have broken, the gears no longer engage so it spins both ways. Is this something I'm likely to be able to fix myself or is it a bike shop job? I don't have any special tools other than the usual allen keys etc.

Thanks

I'm going to assume you mean FCR1. If you have nothing more than allen keys, then no, you won't be able to fix this (swap out the freewheel) yourself. Difficulty level wise, you need to know how to repack and readjust a QR hub. You'll also need to know how to swap a cassette out.

And all teh tools that are necessary to preform the above functions.

If this is a one-shot deal, the cost of the tools would be prohibitive. If you're planning to do your own mechanical work on your bicycle, then I'd say to go ahead and buy the tools. One time? Your LBS would be the best bet. This will give you an idea of what it takes to deal with a hub:

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. It's off to the LBS tomorrow then.

It is really an SCR1 though rather than an FCR1. Not sure what it stands for, always assumed Semi-carbon racer or road as the forks and a couple of other bits are carbon.

Thanks again
