For those of you who saw this show last week, does anyone remember what lance holds up in the hotel bathroom and says that it will cure anything?

Scope or Listerine mouthwash ... can't remember which one. He claims he uses it at the first sign of a sore throat.

TWC - Channel 49 i think it comes on at 8:30 or 7:30... cant remember what time it came on. They re-run it all week though so if you miss it this thursday you have another 6 days to catch the re-run :)

Just to comment on the show in general - it's a pretty sweet look into the life of a Tour champion's prep for another shot @ the big race. I really enjoyed the wind-tunnel testing part of the show.

I was impressed with the level of detail in his preparation. He was analyzing where to attach his ride number so as to minimize wind drag.

yes, the level of detail, wow. and intimacy right down to the chamois cream.
I thought it was interesting he wouldn't consider the radio in the front, I wonder why?
maybe since we're all raised on 'gear goes in the back of the jersey'

To me it just sounded like he wanted to keep it to himself. The guy asked him if he couldn't mention the name because they were not a sponsor and he (Lance) just said "no".

Could anyone understand the last two things he said at the end of the show?? He was riding beside a car and you could hear him say something right before he rode away from the car. I never could make it out even after watching the show twice.

Did anyone notice how much chamios cream he put on the pad in his shorts???!! I was like "OMG!". He was spreading it on like jelly or butter on toast. It had to be at least a quarter of an inch thick.

I normally just put that stuff on myself and then put on my bibs. But I never put it on that thick. I have put it on the pad in my bibs but I keep rubbing it in til it's gone. He basically left it on there as it was.

Does anyone else put it on that thick? It must feel like a crotch full of pudding when he puts that thing on.

Yeah, he put a lot of creme in there I usually jsut smear some on me, and some on the chamois... but never that thick... and it always feels gross the first couple minutes it is on me... slimy !

It's used to prevent chaffing.

Most people don't ride enought to need it. I was only a 250 mile/week racer so I didn't even bother.

I was surprised that Lance even needed that stuff! I would think with your ass on a bike for 5 hours a day practically every day that you would be tough as leather!

Well ya don't really put it on your "business". It sorta goes between the two "businesses" (i.e., the taint). Plus the sit bone area. Those are the two areas where you get chaffing and/or saddle sores. It helps to put it on the pad in your bibs/shorts because it's supposed to condition the chamios and make it last longer. However, with the pads in newers shorts not really being made of chamios anymore, it's not really necessary.

I use the Assos Chamios Creme before every ride and basically just use one or two little dallops. Works wonders for me. Have yet to get a sore or chaffing.

This thread has taken a very interesting route and has brought up a new question. About 2 weeks ago I got chaffed really bad. I hate to be graphic but the chaffing is in two spots, where my upper inner thigh and my junk meet (both sides). What can I do to help this heal quicker? I have not been able to stop riding (I pray that stopping to ride for a while is not the answer) Anyway, any tips are greatly appreaciated, I am in quite a bit of pain.

Different bodies have different needs. Some cyclists never find they need any protection to prevent chaffing while others can't ride 20 miles without getting a rash. If you don't chaff or get a rash when you ride you probably don't need the stuff. If you sweat a lot or just find that you're always chewed-up or chaffed in the nether regions then you could benefit from the use of an ointment or creame. The next problem is finding the right one for you. There are lots of different ones to choose from, ranging from plain old vaseline (not my choice), to A&D ointment (that I do use), to Butt Butt'r, Udder Butter and other dual-purpose "balms" used to keep teets from getting chaffed and irritated, similar types products packaged and sold to cyclists, and then the creme-de-la-creme stuff like Assos.

You put on enough to:
1. Take care of your natural chamois, or
2. Take care of what ever ails ya.

I've got huge nuts, and I have to pull it all up front like Petacchi, If I don't my sack gets pinched between my saddle and groin. Would chamois cream help?

Duh! I never thought about using Bag Balm. That stuff is great. It's the duct tape of skin products!

I thought the actual stuff about the training and the technical stuff was incredibly good. However, the other stuff about his personal life.... not necessary nor interesting. I also think that personally, Lance just doesn't have that kind of charisma necessary to carry a show. He's not very energetic when he speaks, and other than talking about the technical stuff and the training stuff, I pretty much tune out, make phone calls, etc. I don't care about his commercials, his personal relationships, etc. I just want to see what he's doing to get ready for the tour.

What would be smart for OLN to do is get their hands on the CSC movie done by those folks for IMAX. I'm sure that movie would have the drama, talk about the training and be a lot more personalized than the Lance Chronicles.

Two snaps down for trivializing his marriage to Kristin. Yes, I know he's divorced, but I thought it a bit tactless when responding to that woman with the "I have no wife" comment. I'm sure it wasn't thought out at all (since the show's not scripted), but it would have been better if he'd responded with an "I'm divorced" or something along those lines. Just uncool.

I agree with you on the Kristen comment. She is the mother of his 3 kids, they did go through a lot to have those children, they started a life together after his cancer treatment and nobody really knows why they broke up but they are supposedly still friends so I was surprised to hear such a insensitive comment.

It also gets my students to listen to me more often when they see him talking about the same type of training I advocate to them over the years. For instance, when they pricked his finger to get a blood sample to see how much lactic acid was building up in his blood. It came out to something like 2.7, which I found astonishing, considering how hard he hammered before his ride. I've been telling my classes for a long time that a reading of 4 would indicate an overabundance of lactic acid in the blood, and after they saw his lactic acid reading, they were buzzing about it all week. Now some of them want to have a lactic acid test done on themselves too! 2.7 is amazing- that would mean that he can do an incredible amount of work without overtiring.

That alone makes me respect Lance the cyclist even more. But that comment he made about Kristin... damn, that was bad. Definite points lost there. I hope his kids weren't watching that day.

I love how he takes out his own tape measure when they bring him the new bike and was moving things by millimeters. He was being a hard ass with the mechanics (rightly so and he did thank them). I did have a hard time reconciling the serious training/racing Lance who was upset on how Heras left the team and how his wind tunnel test went (i.e. where to attach his ride number to keep down drag) and the personal Lance who left his wife to "trade up to Sheryl Crow" and kind of brags about it while he had 3 kids with Kristen. The way he strolled around with Sheryl and the "no wife" comment did not sit well with me.

But he is a freak of nature. That lactic acid reading was awesome.

Basically, it is nobody's business about his personal life. He is actually the rare athlete who lets the public into his home life and that is probably only because of his cancer experience. He seemed to be with his family at last year's TDF and then separated shortly after. Within a few months he was in a deep relationship with Sheryl Crow. Did he have an affair with Sheryl Crow while still married, did he leave Kristen for Sheryl; it is none of my business.

I am only saying he was very casual in saying I do not have a wife. He could have said I am divorced. He seemed like a swinging single guy showing no respect for his former wife and mother of his 3 kids. Again that is his business.

Perhaps so.

First of all, the show is supposed to be about his training. What does this woman in his life have to do with his training? She's there because she's fameous, and of course, they want to get more people to watch, so why not?

Secondly, he doesn't need to launch into details about anything- he shouldn't have said the comment to begin with. Did you see that particular episode? Do you understand how the statement about him having a wife came up? Do you understand what my point is? I don't care if he's having group sex with the cast of Friends. It's unnecessary to go into the details of his personal life, and if he does bring it up, he should be a bit more sensitive about his ex-wife, I would think. I find it tacky and in bad taste how he was so nonchalant about the woman that went through painful fertility treatments to provide Lance with the children he desired to have. I would think that there would be enough respect for her to at least say he was single without sounding like a complete jerk about it.

He's the one who decided to let the cameras into his life. They said it was supposed to be about his training, and it is... but there's a whole component about his personal life that's also being emphasized too, and I'm sure a large part of it has to do with the fact that he's involved with Ms. Crow. I would have thought he would have taken the time to meet with his publicist and figure out what kind of responses he would have avoided about his personal life, and how he would respond- he IS a public figure, after all. This just goes to show just how little experience he has with public speaking- he came across as pretty callous and disrespectful.

While on the topic of this guy- he wrote a book. He talked about how bad his family life was growing up. He also showed us how he likes to change girlfriends/significant others to suit his personal circumstances. He had a girlfriend for his cancer stage, a girlfriend/wife for his post cancer and rise to the top, and now, he's got a new girlfriend for his celebrity lifestyle he needs to maintain. Anyone saying this show is about his training for the tour would have to be stuck on stupid, because there's definitely a personal aspect being all hyped up. Strolling through a hotel room with a glass of champaign screaming "has Sheryl arrived?" is definitely personal. Talking about how he doesn't have a wife is personal. I'm sure they'll be trotting out the kids a bit closer to the tour so he can talk about how his kids affect his training will for sure be part of the show.

You show Kristen more respect if someone asks that is all we are saying. You don't come off like a swinging single and say I don't have a wife. Just be nicer about someone who was and is important in your life.

I would like to see more training also not just how he makes commercials and jets around with Sherryl Crow. It is a half hour show that should be geared to his training and cycling nuts who care. To hell with getting Ms. Crow fans involved. My wife knows nothing about bikes but is interested in his books and this show because his training and dedication to the sport are very interesting. Running around with Ms. Crow is not. He even said I do not know why his personal relationship with her is even news; and then it winds up being included in the show.

Understand that they taped hundreds of hours for this documentary. Taking this one comment out of this giant context is, perhaps, being unfair to LA. If someone taped hundreds of hours of your life, wouldn't you have one or two statments that you'd rather not have said? I sure would! :D

Anywho, with that it mind, I am with you regarding the comment. It was uncalled for.

as far as the training and such being the only focus of the show... how boring would that be ? He is a personality... to see what goes on in his everyday life, whether it is the mechanics adjusting his saddle 2mm, or shooting a Subaru commercial... it's all there to give an insight to 6 months out of this guys life on his way to possibly make history by winning 6 TdF's. If all we saw was Lance on his bike up a hill, down a hill, going up a hill again.... it'd be pretty boring...
