I have a triple/9sd that came with 9spd sora shifters. Found some 10spd Ultegra shifters dirt cheap, and planned on adding a flight deck computer.

I used the alternative cable routing, setting it up so that when I was on the smallest cog, the shifter would be in "9th", and that when clicked to "10th", there would be no change. This worked perfectly until I added the flight deck.

I programmed the flight deck for 9 speeds, but anytime I click into what would be "10th", the flight deck computer would begin to act funny and read the wrong gear. I tried to setup the gear changes so that the largest gear would be "2nd" on the shifter, but that created too many other shifting issues.

Is the simplest solution to simply get a 10spd cassette? and chain? Can I still use the same crankset, or would the narrower chain not work?

How about this?

What cassette are you using? If you're using a cassette that starts with a 12, program your Flight Deck with an 11 on the smallest cog position, your actual 12 on the second position and so on. Then go back to adjusting your derailleur limit screw so the 10th gear position is blocked off. I think that might work because the Flight Deck reads the gear shifter rather than the derailleur.

If you have a cassette that starts with an 11 you might be out of luck because I don't think that the Flight Deck will allow you to program in a cog smaller than 11.

No, it won't let you do that.

Yes, the SC6502 computer will let you program it for a 10 tooth cog.

"This Is Spinal Tap" movie reference. Nigel has a custom made guitar amp that "goes to eleven".

It's such a fine line between clever and stupid.

No, the line is between brave and stupid, crazy and genius.
