Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I find that enough cheap beer precludes the cleaning of a chain.

hence, its final position in my recommendation. I prefer to have the beer once the chain is soaking...otherwise, nothing gets done

I use gasoline. Very effective. I don't drink it after words, but..

White lightning means I can often be lazy with my fixie chains. But when I do clean I use one of those parktool cyclone jobs. Parktool chain cleaner liquid is the bomb too. It really does just dissolve any grease or muck. I need to clean it now cause it's making a noise and has a few months of crap on it.

i take the chain off the bike, and drop it into an empty 2 liter soda bottle, half full of water with mineral spirits stuff (buy it cheeeep at the hardware store), and shake it up like crazy. then i let it soak. then, i shake it again. then, i take it out, wipe it dry with a clean rag, put it back on the bike, and relube.
so far, so good.

Anyone that takes the chain off is doing an overkill. It should'nt be that big of a task unless your mudding or dont clean it on a regular basis. Its a 5 min job at best.

its not overkill to take the chain off. i do it every few weeks. just unclip the master link on your izumi track chain, drop it in some degreaser, rinse, hang it on a paperclip. after it is dry coat it with some white lightning and let it dry. takes all of twenty minutes while you are surfing the bike forums.
