Tandem Cycling - Rides recommendation

Hello,

We are looking for a nice tandem trip next summer. Ideally we would like a place where we could park the car for a week or 2 and have plenty of ride around. We have preference for hilly terrain (we do not mind about long climb) but also for nice road, nice weather, nice food, nice etc....

I am pretty sure some of you have done great travel and may have nice recommendation.

We are located in Montreal, Quebec and ideally we will like not to exceed 30 hours of car to get there.

29hr's and 59mins away is the Texas Hill Country. I used to live down there and rode all over the place. Great small towns: Austin, San Marco, New Braunfels, Wimberly, Lockhart, Johnson City, Kerrville, Bandera, Fredricksburgh, etc.... Small towns with great BarBQ and cold Shiner Beer. Generally you will also find someone pick'n his guitar stand'n at the microphone. Lots of B&B's or small hotels.
So, if you are looking for long rides out in the hills, remember, this is the place Lance grew up. Hope it works out for you. Enjoy!

PS. It does get a little hot in July and August. It is where the Camel Back comes from.

In the summer of '06 we rode around Lake Michigan. It does not have hills but it is a nice ride. You could skip the southern part, with the large cities, by crossing the lake on a ferry. We left our car at a marina. Read about our trip at http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=3Tzut&doc_id=1875&v=Cv

We do the Great Ohio Bike Adventure. This year's route is not hilly, but it is a fun relaxing ride. Definetly closer to you than Texas.

+1. Lance grew up in North Texas and moved to the Hill Country probably for better training ride options.

central ky 6 hours from detroit we have miles and miles of backroads very scenic i can map it as flat or as hilly as you like many loop routes no backtracking. we tandem and rarely get over 100 miles from home.try it you will like it

+1 on the GOBA. btw, Larry h, i'm planning to do some spring break rides around Lexington KY, any thoughts on routes around there?

Or go upscale, stay at the Greenbrier, with lovley riding through Greenbrier county. Or do a week of each.

You'll have relatively cool temperatures in the summer, and it's not that far a drive from Canada.

You can check: http://www.bikely.com/listpaths/srchkey/fresno%2Cca/page/2 you can go into any region in the US, even abroad, and find a ride that suits your needs.

The Katy trail in Missouri <http://www.bikekatytrail.com/> is about 18 hours away from Montreal, and claims 264 miles- you can ride out and amtrak back, not much in hills (old railbed) but scenic and great eats in the Mo wine region.

Older thread but I just read an article about the Katy trail online. In case anyone is interested:

The Hill Country northwest of San Antonio, all the way up through the center of the state, is great country for touring. But a few points to note.

You're from Canada, where its cool in the summer. Texas gets hot (usually) starting in May.

Last week the lowest daily high was 104 here in CenTx. That makes the pavement temp about 120 to 130. If you're willing to start really early (think lights on the bike) then you'll be okay. Just be ready for a day that could possibly start with 85 degrees at 6 AM, and 40 to 70% humidity.

We are tentatively planning Katy Trail for next summer, probably in early to mid-June.

I would vote for the Texas Hill Country as well. If your a high mileage team, GOBA probably won't do it for you. It's pretty family oriented (nothing wrong with that) and the rides are relatively short each day.

We've done Hellweek out of Fredericksburg a few times and the hills are definitely challenging. Not much flat ground at all.

You might look into one of the Santana tours or rallies or whatever they call them. On the pricy side but a good experience.

For cooler summer riding: Michigan's UP (Upper Peninsula), into Wisconsin and then maybe into Minnesota. Some hills, scenic rides/views near the Great Lakes . . . and in that neck of the woods they do speak Canadian, eh! But youll not find few French speakers.
Northern Arizona and New Mexico have some great altitude riding . . . hills? Well up to 9,000+ ft. if
you want cool summer riding . . .

Finger Lakes in Western New York. Beautiful scenery, all the hills you want, wonderful B+B's, and you can ride there from your house.

There are a few posted on MapMyRide.com. Also you can get the Horsey 100 routes off the Blue Grass Cycling Club site http://www.bgcycling.org/. We were there recently and did a 30 mile loop with a 30 mile out and back from Verrsailes to Frankfort that takes you past the Kentucky Vietnam Memorial (very moving), Daniel Boones grave, and to an overlook view of the state capital. Later today I'll post the route on mapmyride.com.

This is a really good suggestion. We just got back from the UP and Door County and the back roads offer some excellent riding.
