Training & Nutrition - Winter weight

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

When do you guys start trying to shed the weight and how are you doing it? I, for some reason, am only up 12 pounds from my peak summer. As I get a year older, it still seems harder and harder. I am also 12 BPM higher when working. I usually spin pretty hard at 155 and now Im doing the same effort at 167.
Its fun to gain it but man, sucks to loose it.

I ride more and eat less when I feel like loosing the weight. I started in mid Feb but I was only up 6 lbs over my goal weight of 150. However, one of my goals is to drop into the 140s soon. Better to start sooner than latter IMHO.

The best way I know to lose the winter weight is with "the Drip" pro cycling eating plan. YOu can google it or check it out here: www.cyclo-club.com/public/926.cfm?affid=30269

Just break up your meals into many smaller meals. It worked for me and others way before anyone came up with a plan.
Eat healthy, drink plenty of water, sleep, and exercise.

I stay in shape during the winter. Pick up alternatives like skiing, boarding, backpacking, snowshoeing, and XC skiing.

This is true. Except that I just spent 10 days in Italy including walking all over Rome followed by six days of skiing in the Dolomites. I was even good by limiting my gelato intake to three two-scoop cones over the three days in Rome. But despite 6 to 8 hours of exercise each day I still put on several pounds. Well worth it considering the food I was eating and the wine I was drinking.
I'm about 5 lbs over where I wanted to be in late February and 15 lbs over where I want to be by mid-summer. But I'm not worried about dropping 15 lbs over the next four to five months. I just started using FitDay again this morning and there is now enough daylight to get short, quick morning rides in before work.

I'm in the same spot as you...I want to drop about 10LBS for the season but my problem is that I do not have enough self control to eat properly all the time. I work long hours and can;t always eat at the same time or any time during rush periods.
I'm trying to set a better eating schedule and make more meals myself but its hard when you get home from a 13 hour day and then have to make dinner...I'm just tired!

Telebianchi (and Chris R.),
Ditto in terms of weight loss goals. I dropped 30lbs 2 years ago and gain 10 back in winters. Now I want to loose the winter weight (again) but also want to loose another 10-15. I have two problems:
1. I can't find a BMI or other index that says I am the right weight.
2. Hills.
Chris says 4 meals. I have a home office and am up to 6 meals and still haven't lost weight:rolleyes:
TB, I followed a similar Siena, Venice and Rome regime but haven't used FitDay or any on line cure. I record weight and workout on a spreadsheet but don't plan or record food or other detail.
Does FitDay do something else that helps? A couple of years ago I had Carmichael for 6 months. It was good in exercise plans, some feedback, podcasts helped with diet tips but not cheap.
PS. I believe your food and wine story but only 2x gelato?
