Cyclocross - Trying to hunt down a Lemond Poprad Disc model... reward if found?!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm trying to hunt down a larger framed Lemond Poprad Disc. I know that Lemond has recently shutdown but this is the bike that I want and the local shops dont have any in stock or have already sold them.

I am in the Louisville area and would be willing to take a road trip to get one, as far as Chicago. I always need an excuse to go there anyway.

Does anyone know if their LBS has one in stock? 59-61cm needed. If you find me one I'll send you 20 bucks. No joke.

looks like they should have at least one at gregg's cycle in seattle at the greenlake location, you know what you want so you shouldn't need a test-ride, maybe you can call and just get it shipped?

if that works i want my $20 :)

I saw a couple disc Poprads this past week in Chicago at:
Johnny Sprockets (http://johnnysprockets.com/)
Village Cycle (http://villagecycle.com/)

I picked up a canti Poprad at JS just today!

I talked to Manuel at Johnny Sprockets and they are holding a 59cm Poprad Disc for me. I'm gonna go grab it up this weekend/beginning of next week! PM me your address for your reward!

I can get a 52 cm Poprad (disc) from two different places. I hear that one should go with a smaller size (with the Poprad) than you usually would. My Madone is a 56cm, and the local shop says the 52 cm is a better fit than the 55 on the Poprad. Does this sound plausible?

Is this bike worth the extra costs? I can get a Fuji Cross Comp for about half what the Poprad would cost me, and this will be my bad weather bike.

AaronAnderson

The poprad should only cost you 12 or 1300 dollars right now as they are on closeout. a 52cm will PROBABLY be right for you. Geometry is different from bike to bike and so are the measurements. In the trek road series I need a 64cm, but ride a 58 and 59 on my fixed gears and soon to be a cx bike.

Make sense?

hey guys,

anybody see/find any poprads in the nyc tri-state area? i've been looking, but not getting lucky.

I took a look at the Gary Fisher Presidio which is the same frame as the Poprad and it looks pretty damn awesome. It doesn't have disc brakes and it's a little more expensive, but it's a badass bike.

I bought my Poprad from Manuel. Good guy for sure and doesn't hassle you to purchase.

I was told that the Presidio is basically a canti Poprad with a few marginal upgrades to occupy a pricepoint within the Trek/Gary Fisher cyclocross family. Retailers always likes a good, better, best scenario based on price...

Goddamn you! I was going to say Gregg's too, so I should get half of that 20.

I'll go to the shop and look at it/touch it if you want me to, but that's cost you an extra 5 or so.

I got it! boy it's cold in Chicago! It's a very classy looking bike. It's better than I could tell from the pictures! I'll be sure to give the reward. just give me a day to get myself back on track from a weekend out.

Horrible picture with crappy camera. Good pictures will be on Velospace sooner or later. I have to get a shorter stem and maybe different bars. I'm a little too stretched out when I'm on the hoods. No big deal.

Nice!

Your seatpost looks excruciatingly high; are your legs really that long?

AaronAnderson
03-07-09, 05:12 PM
Haha. Yeah. I'm 6'4.5" and most legs.

This is my fixie, again, with high seatpost :) That's just how I roll. :innocent:

Yeah! I paid 1199 in Chicago + tax (redonkulous sales tax)

What size?

Reaper0Bot0
03-23-09, 09:02 PM
52cm. My Madone's a 56cm, and while the disparity scared me a little at first blush I've heard you go a size down on cross bikes. I have yet to test-ride it, but I did do a very cursory "fitting" at the shop a few weeks back. It seemed about right. The 55cm seemed too damned big.

I'm very tall and found the Poprad a little longer and shorter than most modern geometry cycles.

Was it worth it? I want it for commuting and touring. I've ridden my Madone to work a few times but the roads are **** and I really don't like taking my Madone that way, especially when I may get stuck in the dark...

Sure seems like a very versatile ride. Gorgeous, too.

AaronAnderson
03-23-09, 09:16 PM
I really love it. I had to change the stem and tires. I just absolutely love the classic road bike shape and flat top tube. I mainly commute and do some 25-35 mile joy rides on mine. It will see a lot of miles and 2 planned centuries this year. It rides great. All of the reviews I read said "eww, flexy fork" It really is the flexy fork that makes it smooth! carbon seatpost helps too.

The only bad thing about it is that it doesn't have any braze ons for any kind of rack. I've considered getting a topeak beamrack and using an aluminum seatpost. I also need a wider range of gearing. The two chainrings aren't that different in size. So a new crankset is probably going to be on order soon.

I can't wait till fall to put the knobbies back on it and give a go at some cx races.

Reaper0Bot0
03-23-09, 09:21 PM
The lack of braze ons is a concern, as I'd like to do some touring on it. Hrrmmm.....

No reason I can't use a seatpost rack, I guess.

AaronAnderson
03-23-09, 09:23 PM
There are also some pretty clever front racks that put their weight on the axle and you could probably make one work on that fork

Reaper, do you recall the size?

I too am on a hunt for a 49, pref 07 or 08. Chicago's inventory of poprads were cleaned out a couple weeks back when good weather showed face.

I'm actually going to be ordering a Presidio on Monday or Tuesday. The main difference I saw between it and the Poprad was that the Presidio comes with sram rival. I'm a little worried about all this talk about buying a frame size smaller. My shop is first opening on May 1st, and doesn't have any in stock for me to try out either. Do you guys think the Presidio would be the same seeing as how it is darn near a Poprad frame? I was planning on getting a 57 seeing as how I take either a 56 or 58 on a regular road bike (Trek FWIW). Curious now...

The guys I trust at the shop tell me that the fisher and the lemond are the same geometry.

I saw the 2009 Brodie Ronin - steel for this year at LBS nice bike. The setup is not as good as Lemond but a good start at 1650 CAD MSRP - although I thought a little cheaper when I saw it in store.

Has anyone seen a 08 49cm Poprad Disc for sale anywhere. I'd prefer the NJ / tri state area, bu would be willing to travel a little to get one. (Will be headed down to Virginia in a couple weeks, so MD, DC or Va are all options).

Thanks

Same frame, different stickers. Trek had to do *something* with all the Poprad frames once they dropped LeMond. :)

I'm a little worried about all this talk about buying a frame size smaller.

Personally, I wouldn't pay heed to that talk. I ride a 60 road bike and got a 60 Poprad. It's perfect, and I ride it both on- and off-road.

well I've had my bike for a little less than a week. Rode about 4 times and put about 35 miles on it so far. Not a ton, but I am a clyde and trying to ease into this and do it the right way. I did end up going with a 57cm, but I think it fits pretty darn good. A 55 would just of been too small. I will say that bike is buttery smooth, and Rival is working OK so far. Would of liked the option to be able to put disc brakes on, but I don't think you can (not positive though). My only gripe is the brakes squeal a little. Canti's for ya I guess. I will definitely post some pics in the near future, as I think I am the only one who has one around these forums. Maybe not, but I'll take some pics in the next couple of days. So far I love it!

Unfortunately, due to Trek's rules I couldn't convince him to ship this and Boise is just a little to far to pop over to on the weekend to pick this up so I am still looking for one in the NJ/NY/CT tri state area or anything on the way down to Williamsburg Va (as I'll be headed there next weekend). So if anyone sees one in there local shop. Please drop me a line.
