Guys, a chap with type 1 (like me) has been referred to me by his diabetic nurse at his hospital. He is a very fit, category-2 rated road racer. He recently had to curtail part of his daily training because of the arrival of a baby in the family. He says that since his diagnosis his ability to race has suffered a bit and where he used to usually finish in the top three of each race, he now has a best place sixth. This is understandably causing him a bit of worry as he wants to achieve pre-diagnosis form if he can. He particularly mentioned that his quads burn out much quicker and where he used to have a strong sprint finish he finds that harder to do now. I don't know him personally. I've tried to give him some training advice, and how he might want to change his insulin injections and dosage. Is there anything you can suggest that can help shape his training and diet, drinks. Any programs you've tried for better or worse would help him (and me) to get a better understanding of what's ok and not ok to try. He'd appreciate some good ideas. I don't know if he has access to gyms or an ergotrainer but anything you can suggest that cover the bases would be appreciated.

You think it might be a metal block issue? How much really changed pre and post diagnosis? Maybe the break from his training has hindered his ability?

In his email, he really did seem on top of the mental aspect. In fact, he was quite resolved to set out to prove that he could get his form back. I get the impression it is a physical thing. He trains about 8 hours a week on the road and races on Sunday. I think this guy is very motivated.
