Folding Bikes - ikea bag for folder...

i live in nyc and ikea recently open up a store in brooklyn...does any1 know if ikea is still selling this bag? if so how much? thx in advance.

I bought my Ikea bag about a year ago so I can't say if it's still available. At the time it was really cheap. Around $2.29, i think. I think the swedish name is "dimpa" bag. It rocks.

Never thought to use the ikea bag for carrying the bike (I have 2 that I use a laundry bags!). Anyway, they're super-cheap and can be purchased at the checkout stands. I wanna say they're under $1, but don't quote me on that.

1lesscar...where do u live and where is ur ikea? was wondering if the ikea in nyc have them or not.

I'm sure that all IKEA stores will have them. Companies like that transfer these iconic features to all their outlets. Just be careful when you buy one that it is the BIG bag. I was in IKEA the other day and bought a blue bag and when I unwrapped it, it was a very small one. I never saw one of those before and thought they were all the large type.

can u elaborate...why doesn't the current big blue bag doesn't work too well? this is for a 16" folder, not for 20" folder.

Thanks for that link. They cost £2.93 in UK IKEA. Excellent. I'm just trying to remember the folded width of the Brompton. Is it 8.75"? That's the width of the bag. I think it is more like 10". Will the bag take it?

re: Dimpa bags (the all-enclosing transparent ones, not open-top blue ones).

A Brompton does indeed fit into the Dimpa, I've tried.
They are not very convenient if you need to carry the bike for considerable distances, though, because the handles are crap (the blue Ikea shopping/laundry bags have the same problem, btw) -- the fabric bunches up and digs into your shoulder.

No idea as to the longevity of either Ikea bag, due to the above, since after two commutes with a blue bag I've broken down and bought me a nice folding bike carrying bag from Carradice. It's expensive, but I've got no ergonomic complaints so far (well, apart from "should've ordered the one without those utterly redundant rucksack straps").

That's me in the picture Vincent. The blue Ikea bag works fine for my purposes(toting bike short distances), but, it doesn't completely cover the bike. If you need to cover the bike the Dimpa might be a better option. At only $4.99, I Might just pick one up myself next time my wife drags me to an Ikea. Now if i can just unload this useless El Bolso I paid way too much for!

The Dimpa might work for a Brompton, but it isn't deep enough for the Citizen Tokyo that I'm contemplating buying - I need at least 11 inches, and it has 9. :(. However, I noticed a cargo bag from Everest on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Everest-B-082-Oversize-Cargo-Travel/dp/B00158TKAM/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1SVNB91KKS29&colid=1KAVFG6CJGHIM that ought to do the trick.

I used TWO of the blue Ikea bags for my old Dahon. One is the bottom part and one is like a "lid". They are joined together with two zips. Used to drive to IKEA and park there (free). Take the bus (free- "no bikes on the bus") to town and ride around. Then went back the same way.

The Ikea in Brooklyn does indeed have the big blue bags and does indeed sell them.

I've thought of using the big blue bag for my folding bike but it's really flimsy and cheap. And I don't think my folder would fit properly in there so I just purchased an official carry bag specifically designed and built to fit my bike. It works out better for me that way.

The large Dimpa sounds like the one for Swift.

The dimensions of Dimpa:
100x65x22 cm

The dimensions of moderately disassembled Swift:
85x61x23 cm

Though being crap for carrying it appears like suitable econo-cover when taking Swift into my car.
I'll go visit IKEA next weekend.

I picked one up at the Ikea in Elizabeth, NJ, and it fits my Dahon Curve pretty well.

I have a Ikea bag and you needn't go to the trouble of going to Ikea to buy one. I bought mine on eBay. Sure it cost a little more than in the store, but I didn't have to schlep.
