dried figs work really good on the bike. I just put 4 or 5 in my jersey pocket. no peeling, no mess, no wrappers. Just figs

Clif bars and those gel packets and all that performance food works, too

For pre/post-ride foods, take a look at some of Monique Ryan's columns at VeloNews.

On the bike, I like to shoot for 40g of carbohydrates per hour for rides over 2 hours. Bananas seem to be a long-standing favorite among many cyclists, based on the peels I see on the side of the road. They're easy to eat, easy to stuff into a jersey, and you can toss the biodegradable peels when you're done.

I like to include some serious sugar if I'm going to hammer and/or do a seriously hilly route. This is usually a home-made brew of 1 part lemon juice, 4 parts honey (1 part = 1/2 tablespoon per hour) and sometimes a dash of Crystal Lite powder for added flavor. I've actually done 4-hour rides on only this gel mix and it's worked nicely.

I usually like to have a good bottle of water and something with flavor. I really enjoy eating nuts on the go. They have protein and provide energy for me. One thing I'm getting into after my rides is to go back home and make a shake with some whey protein powder in it. It helps my legs heal faster with less soreness after riding. I found several different kinds of powders but one works best for me and I found it at this website. https://us-sport.com/index2 I'd suggest looking into getting some.
But with snacks for during i'd go with taking fruits or nuts or even granola/power bars. Something you can get energy from. Good Luck with the biking.
