Northern California - Help - need LBS to pack/ship a bike in Sausolito/Marin County area

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've found a new (to me) bike, can anyone recommend an LBS that would be willing to pack and ship to me in the midwest? Its a long wheelbase recumbent bike, so prefer a recumbent or tandem shop if possible.

Try giving REI.com a call if you have one nearby you in the midwest. When I moved back to SF from Dallas I used REI to ship my bike. They packed, shipped and put together my bike for about $100. I don't remmeber the actual price though...

Worth a shot...

Good luck!

The two shops in Sausalito that I know of are Mike's Bikes (http://mikesbikes.com/) and A Bicycle Odyssey (http://bicycleodyssey.com/#). They are worth calling. Mike's is a regional chain . Bicycle Odyssey is a stand-alone with a definite interest in clssic stuff, although they have plenty of new stuff, too. (I've had limited exposure but good luck with both of them.) At a minimum, they can probably give you some good leads.

There are other shops nearby in Mill Valley, Corte Madera and probably Larkspur, but I know nothing about them. Try googling "marin bicycle" to see what you get.

Another thought: google some tandem or 'bent builders and check out their lists of dealers. Look for addresses in Sausalito, Marin City, Mill Valley, Corte Madera, Larkspur, San Rafael, Kentfield, San Anselmo or Fairfax (that is roughly in order of nearest to to furthest from Sausalito).

And to follow up on Gee3's post, I do believe there is an REI in San Rafael.

Good luck.

If 'bents require special treatment, you might also ask in the Recumbent forum here on BikeForums.

Thanks everyone, the seller was extremely eager to move the bike out of his home, so I went with Mike's Bikes and they are boxing it up in the next few days. No special differences other than size, since it is just a bike. Te seller also had an additional "saddle" and for a recumbent, the saddle can be more like an office chair in size, so I'm hoping the technicians at Mike's Bikes will do their best to make the shipment a compact one or to break it into two smaller boxes, we will see. I did post in some other recumbent forum but didn't get much more input than here due to the timing, but regardless, thanks for the help and I am eagerly awaiting my dream ride.

Good luck. I bought my Cannondale from Mike's in Sausalito. You should be in good hands.

Tony is a great mechanic but he forgets to do things. Mikes' is close of but I always get the feeling I am in a chain store. There are several high end shops in Mill Valley, very close, but I am not familiar with them. Further away Village Peddler in Larkspur is good and Sunshine Cyclist in Fairfax is tops.

I do not know of any recumbent shops closer than Oakland or San Francisco.
