Anyone have openions on Arkel's 'the bug' (at panniers.com). It is a backpack that converts into a rear pannier. There is one on ebay right now, and I would like to get some openions first.
thanks.

First, check them at www.panniers.com
ARKEL is a canadian co., and I spoke to the owner while at the Bike Show in NYC last saturday. Their products are tough,I saw'em first hand, impressed by the thoroughness and the well thought ouit features. The material look first rate too, he made me try to rip of the cordura fabric of which their panniers are made of and couldn't rip it for the life of me, even though it was already cut half way the fabric!

I have been using an Arkel Utility Basket Pannier for three years. I do not baby my equipment and can attest to the quality of their products. I almost bought a Bug myself a while back and only didn't because I decided I have enough bags, etc.

I have one. I've used it for a semster and it works great. Keep your books in a plastic bag so they don't get wet though. If you're a bigger person like me (6'2" 222lbs) then the straps are going to be a little short. This means it rides higher up on your back, but it does keep the bag in place really well. Most of the time I find I don't even use the straps though, but for going hiking off of your bike it is really nice to have. They are very well made and I haven't had a problem yet even while carrying about 30lbs of books and such in it (bike commuting would be easier if I wasn't a biology major). Good luck.
