Beanz, Rooftest: good stuff.

I was thinking of not doing this because I don't know anyone else that was planning on doing it.

I'm down to 175 and might try 165 for this.

Got a 50/34 compact and 12-27 just for this party.:thumb:

It doesn't matter who you know cause everyone breaks up anyways. I tried to do it with a friend but it's hard to keep another's pace on climbs like this. Besides, once the ride is over, you'll know most of the people!:D I met SCVRoadie, RonsmithJR, Homey and a few others on the ride.

You wasted your money on the new equipment. My big butt did my best time on a standard 39/25. Nothing very steep! And after the first 20 miles to the ski resort, it's all peaches and cream! But then again, you''ll be riding a Lemond!:roflmao2::D

Ha! I've done it every year on a LeMond with 39/25 also. I'm 25 pounds lighter this year, and should have my Colnago ready by then.

How much did you weigh and how did you do on time? Well Colnago, that's a different story!:D

Weight and the effort it takes to lose the weight does make a difference on these rides. I weighed about 20 lbs more on Breathless Agony and I sucked!:D

First time was (approximate - I don't feel like looking them up) about 9:15 total at 185 lbs. Last year was about 7:45 total at the same weight.

That's about the way it goes. First time is slower cause you don't know what to expect and unfamiliar with the course. I did the first Bear in 8:38 at about 230 then 7:40 total time the next year at 220. The third time I did it in 7:50'ish without trying too hard and along break when I met some forum members at the lunch stop.

Last time I did it was about 3 years ago and I'm getting nothing but older! If I don't get into shape, I just might do 11 hours this year!:p

Uh, no way. I got totally blasted on some 15-20%'s on a longish training ride. Mashing does not work for me. If I can keep my cadence up I can climb much more comfortably with the compact as I did with standard 53/39 and, my legs feel much better later in the ride.

We do a fair number of steep (12%+)climbs and the weight loss was key initially but, still, after 75 miles how many of those climbs can you mash? Me? Not many, not at a decent rate anyway.

Besides Beanz, LANCE said it's best to spin up those climbs. And you know LA would never lie to us mere mortals.:D

Yeeeeeah! That's why he keeps winning! Everyone's on compacts and he's an a standard!:p...It's a trick!:D

Not me this year. The Eastern Sierra Double is on the same day (as it was last year), so I alternate years with Bear / Eastern Sierra. My best Bear time was 6:59:13 just in case the Beanzer is looking for a goal to beat.

If you don't stop for bagels, Beanz, you could do it!

Rick / OCRR

Okay, edit, revise . . . the schedule has changed and they are NOT on the same day, so I'm now IN for The Bear. Probably I'll still be recovering from Eastern Sierra double, so no fast times this year!

We did it the last year in our tandem and it was super fun. We are not sure if we are doing it again this year. This is one of the coolest centuries we've done on a tandem :thumb:

There is a slight chance that I might do it. Last year I decided to put an end to all that masochistic nonsense (e.g. 100 miles, 9,000' of climbing). But there are no that many alternatives, so I might try it again. As an added insentive, Mr. Beanz can't kick my arse this year at least in the age group standings. :D I'll be in the 50-59 age group, son! :p

I'd like to do it but I'm not sure about the air quality in June. Even when I've ridden this ride when it was in April I had some problems with the smog.

We did it last year and had no issues with the air quality, but I don't know what the usual smog in the area is.

I've done it 3 times and everytime it was cool and just about drizzlin' so the air seemed clean. Then once up near the first rest stop, you look down and see how much cleaner the air is up there!:D

I'll attempt to register; with only 400 slots it might be hard to get in.

I'll be doing this 39/24 or 39/27 for a good portion, I suspect.

I was going through some bike junk in the garage yesterday and found a patch from the last time I did the ride which was June 2006. For some reason I was thinking that the ride used to be in April but now I'm questioning whether or not that was ever the case???
At least now I remember why the smog was bad, it was June. I'd probably prefer to do this ride in April. ;-)
