Martyhow do you like the pearl for email/texting over say, the curve? they keypad seemed awfully small to me, and I have small fingers.

I HATE the pearl for texting/emailing. Get the curve or other full-size keyboard.

I got a T-Mo service plan and the phones for free at www.wirefly.com
So far, I like T-Mobile. The EDGE network might not be the best but they
havent goofed around with the billing. 80.00 per month for 1000 minutes,
5 Faves and internet/data.
I had Verizon before and it was the worst thing Ive spent money on, period

"My" requirements have evolved into this:
- Full qwerty keyboard (too hard texting otherwise)
- wireless (standard wi-fi capable)
I require wireless because I have given up on buying data plans when browsers on cell phones (had it on 3 different ones and all the same) don't work half the time. I prefer to have it wi-fi capable and just free wi-fi if available.
I am also a T-Mobile customer and know from a conversation once with a rep that sidekicks have a really weird feature (not sure if any others do or not) that they use their data connection to keep contacts on the server instead your phone's memory so if you don't have internet plan you will occasionally just lose your contact list for no apparent reason. Dumbest damn thing I ever heard.
I was looking on the site just last week and the Samsung Gravity caught my eye. Seems to be a full qwerty (slider) with wi-fi. I may look in to switching to that at some point. Right now I have the Dash and its pretty much a P.O.S. I can't stand it. I've had issues with it since I got it.

Additional note:
I've had Blackberry in the past and I have mixed feelings about it. It was probably the best interface for a phone I've used and easiest to use. However, it died on me and DIED HARD (after just under a year). I lost everything and was unable to get it replaced for a few days during a pretty bad time when I needed a phone. Got a replacement and it went about 5 months and DIED HARD the same way. I loved the phone, but didn't like the way it died so hard and lost everything. I had no good synch program at the time either, IIRC.

crashing is one reason why I want to stick with t-mo. I've been with them a couple years and have a few "extra phones" lying around (basic flip phones). In the event of a crash, I'd lose data, but not my phone service (as its my only connection to the world).

3G and wifi kills the battery. You can easily make shortcuts to either (or use the Power Manager app) to turn them on whenever you need them. I keep mine set on Edge and GPS. It keeps a +90% charge all day on standby. As with any smart phone, apps (games mostly) and music kill the battery.
It's much better now that more serious apps are being developed. Battery is user-replaceable. MicroSD slot (SanDisk has a 16GB card now). Full keyboard.
600 minute + full data plan run me about $87 a month. Unlimited T-Mobile hotspot access is great for traveling.
My only two gripes: 1. No tethering, 2. No dedicated mini-stereo jack. They have a USB -> mini-stereo cable, which works (has pause, and next track function), but it's still a PITA.

I just got a Blackberry Curve a few weeks ago and I love it so far. The best part about it for me is the calender. I always hated daily planners and never used them consistently, but the weekly view on the BB is great. I text a lot and after a couple of weeks I became comfortable with the keypad, even though I still make a few errors.
My only complaint is that the internet is not great and it has started to load slowly. It's still functional but sometimes I want to do some quick reading and I can't because the site hasn't loaded quick enough. That is probably a problem with my signal though.

Which model did you have? I've had several from the 7100 to the 8100 to the 8800, and now a 8820. Never had a problem. And in regards to losing data, Blackberry device manager now has a simple ui, and takes about a minute to back up.
I suggest the Curve, they do everything. You might like the 8100 but in my opinion Suretype takes awhile to learn the words you most often use, and even then will occasionally put the wrong word in. (which sometimes makes you look like an idiot)

If I didn't have my iPhone, I would definitely go back to the BB Curve. I think Tmobile is about to come out with a black Curve. You might do some research on this. It's the best phone I've had besides the iPhone...for all reasons. I like the full keyboard
Blackberry 8900 curve if you want a camera
Blackberry 8820 if you don't

If emailing and business type stuff is a requirement, the ifone and Google fone
dont have as intensive email programs as the BBerry. It can work with Word.docs

T-Mobile ????
I just had my first issue that was easy to rectify, thank goodness.
The Browser cache and Event Log should be cleared regularly or
you get the dreaded hourglass as it frees up space for itself.
A cleaning and battery pull fixed mine up right away :)
Turning the WiFi off when not in use will help save the battery too ! :)
Must haves: (my opinion)
Wi-fi

Qwerty keypad

agreed! G1 with its snazzy touch screen and real internet is a real battery suck.
curve looks like it will hold up well.
I did invest in the $6/month phone hazard plan, so if I accidentally flush it or something I can get another one

Blackberries are cool. After an initial hate period on the 7--- series, I got the 8700 and am happy with it. When this phone dies (not likely to be soon) I am getting another blackberry, prolly the curve (I really hate the pearl and its stupid keyboard).
