Bicycle Mechanics - horizontal play in brake lever

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. i have an fairly standard old hooded brake lever from a 70s road bike. its a really nicely drilled and looks lovely.
however it has horiztonal play and can move freely. it still works fine but the play annoys me.
the parts inside dont apear to have worn.
any ideas on how to fix this?

Without a picture or 3 I can only guess the design from your description. But try tightening any bolts you find. Some play is normal in some levers and isn't a cause for concern.

Rofl. Comedy gold. Nice one panthers
if you think thats comedy you must have zero sense of humour.
i already tried tightening stuff.
ive actually fixed it now. i placed a washer in the lever axle which now makes the lever fit tighter.

Eureka! You struck paydirt!
As I remember those sorts of brakes (some of them), sometimes if one took them apart, even partially, they would never get tight/stay tight again. And it became a test of nerves between the now-wobbly brakes, and taking them off, stomping on them, and buying new ones.
