Road Cycling - Shimano shortage?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
About a month ago I ordered a 58cm Bianchi Volpe. At the time the LBS and Bianchi USA said it would be about a 4 week wait.
I called Bianchi yesterday and now they're saying it will be available "around the end of June". They say the problem is that they can't get Shimano components.
I checked with different LBSs for alternate bikes, the LeMond Poprad & Jamis Nova. Neither one was available in my size. The explanation was the same- Shimano parts are not available.
Does anyone here have any information on the "shortage"?
I'd also like to hear some recommendations for an alternative steel framed road bike (57 or 58cm), priced under $1000 that's in stock somewhere.
Thanks.
The shortage is real. It's one reason why Shimano parts sell as well as they do on Ebay. On my last build, I weighed the cost diffference between buying used components off Ebay against buying new at Performance. Adding in shipping and the unknown, it was cheaper to buy new, what with Performance' decent prices + their 20% coupon. Examples....
Front der - $27, rear der - $40, shifters - $128, cassette - $32, BB - $32, crank - $96, etc....All of this brand new Ultegra gear with no shipping and a full warranty. (plus no sales tax in OR) These prices are comparable, if not better, than what I'd pay on Ebay for semi-used stuff + the cost of shipping.
Now, ordering and getting it were 2 different things. I'm still waiting on a cassette and a bottom bracket. I've been using others in the meantime.
As for bikes - I have a beautiful 57cm Poprad I'm not using. Are you looking specifically for a CX bike?

try eBay
Just go for Campy...
I'm looking for a complete bike. Does Campy come attached to anything with a steel frame for under $1000?
Update:
My LBS located a Surly Cross Check in my size. It seems to have the features I'm looking for. I told them to order it, should be in next week. I'm STOKED!

I keep giving the same answer to different questions: Bianchi Eros.
It lists at $1099, but there's no reason you need to pay list. I don't own one and am not planning on buying one. It just seems to fit a lot of needs.

The shortage is real. I know first hand that a Division I pro team had trouble getting Shimano cassettes during the Tour of Georgia.
Well for cassettes one could always use SRAM anyway.
As for bikes with Campy, see if you can find a 2003 Marin San Marino. Made in Italy of Columbus Foco steel tubing, it comes with a nice mix of Veloce and Centaur components. (Go for $1200 on ebay brand new, buy it now, but you may be able to find cheaper)
and the shortage is in frames from the east as well. Giant, Scott, Specialized all in short supply.
Seems the muppets underestimated demand for this year, sent their figure through to Shimano who geared themselves up to handle that projected demand (which was in error) and now the OEM's have realised they underestimated demand by about 60%. result - No bloody spares, no groupsets, only parts on bikes.
It's going to be a tough few months....
I just want a freakin 110 bottom bracket

FYIIYC: the Shimano shortage is so bad it has affected my delivary of 450 beach crusiers at my job. The Shimano E-type coaster brake rear hub used by every beach crusier manufactuer and is very simple to maintain and rebuild.
Shortage is real. Maybe to drive prices higher or whatever.
Go with Campy. Maybe cheaper and last much longer.
Many companies are mixing parts now which I think is great. I know for us to get a D/A bike is a miracle. And when we do people kill fo rthe parts. Ridiculous.
I know Ultegra started to hit distributrs a few weeks back. But that is different than OEM parts.
Do you want a Bianchi? If so ask them what they can do now on your size? Hoefully Bianchi will change specs on some models to ge them to customers.
Also try to order through another shop. I know sopme shops do not follow up on orders as others. So Bianchi may have some but they shop simply forgot to order for you.
We sell many Fuji's here and so far no real problems with them. Same with K2 road bikes.
