Hi all, I'm a newbie here, just getting back into cycling after more than 10 years away...

Been looking at a lot of typical "entry-level" road bikes, and happened across a local person selling a 2-year-old GT road bike (not sure of the model, but I think it's the GT ZR 5.0). Been having a hard time finding any info about these bikes--does anyone happen to know if they're any good? What happened to GT Bicycles? Why are they not selling road bikes in the U.S. anymore? Should I be concerned about this?

Any info would be greatly appreciated (I can't search "GT" on these boards, it won't search for such a small word).

Thanks,
Geekgirl

gt bikes

i have one, a gt 'edge', aluminum.

i like it.

i think gt has not made road frames for at least 5 years though you maybe can still
buy them.

they turn up all the time on ebay, selling for $350-800, depending on components and
age.

I am pretty sure they sold road bikes up until about 2 years ago. My GF has a ZR4000 and so far it has been a great entry level bike for her. I heard from my local GT dealer that they are going to be producing road bikes once again. (no facts, just what I heard) Mostly check the components and condition, if it looks good and rides good then buy it.

there was a bit of a hiccup in gt's history after it was acquired by pacific cycles, along with schwinn, in 2002. however, the company appears to be back, and a look at its web site (http://www.gtroadbikes.com/) shows a full range of road bikes. unlike schwinn, they're being sold in reputable bike shops.

gt bikes from 2000/2001 were great values. they were exceptionally well-specced for the price, and had great geometry. in fact, the entire products line had the same geometry as the race bikes used by the lotto team, and all the frames from the zr 3.0 up were essentially the same as the frames used by lotto in 2001.

good bikes.

The GT's were decent road bikes. I think the 5.0 was the absolute bottom of the line, with the 1.0 or Team being the best. If its really cheap its probably not too bad of a deal but get it checked out by a shop. GT's are extremely stiff typically, since they are aluminum which is stiff to begin with, and they have that triple triangle rear end. Stiff is good if you are racing, but can be tiring on long rides.
